Chapter 8: The Aftermath Inside the Walls

Back inside the grand foyer, the silence was suffocating. Beatrice Vance stood motionless by the window, watching the silver sedan pull away from the curb. Her hands were clasped tightly behind her back, her fingers trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain military composure. The untouchable general, who had dictated procurement budgets and influenced Pentagon appointments for decades, now felt the cold shadow of impending arrest and public humiliation closing in.

Julian finally lifted his head from his hands, his eyes bloodshot and filled with panic. "We need to destroy the physical files in the study, Beatrice. The paper records, the old ledgers from the nineties—if the feds raid this house, we’re finished. We need to burn them right now."

Beatrice turned slowly, her eyes fixing Julian with a look of absolute contempt. "Don't be a fool, Julian. The moment that data hit civilian servers, federal magistrates signed search warrants. Any attempt to destroy evidence now is an automatic obstruction charge, doubling our prison time."

Elena paced across the hardwood floor, her boots clicking frantically. "We can’t just sit here and wait for the military police to march through the front door! There has to be a contingency plan. We have allies on the Armed Services Committee—surely someone can intervene, bury the audit, classify the whole mess under national security!"

"Nobody is going to stick their neck out for a sinking ship, Elena," Beatrice said, her voice dropping into a harsh, realistic register. "Clara didn't just leak internal memos; she exposed a systemic, cross-generational pipeline of kickbacks that implicates half the procurement board. The Pentagon won't protect us because protecting us now would bring down the entire department."

The harsh reality of their situation settled over the room like a heavy shroud. The empire they had built on intimidation, falsified inventories, and silenced whistleblowers was collapsing from the top down. The medals on Beatrice’s uniform suddenly felt like worthless tin, symbols of an honor they had traded away for luxury and power.

Julian stood up, his legs shaking beneath him. He looked at the spot on the hardwood floor where Clara had been struck down just a short time ago. He realized then that his compliance had not saved him; it had only made him an accomplice to his own destruction. The sister he had dismissed as weak had proved to be the strongest person in the entire family.
