Chapter 2 - The Silence Before the Microphones

The gym grew preternaturally quiet, the ambient hum of the ventilation system suddenly loud against the backdrop of staring teenagers. Marcus stood frozen in the center of the polished hardwood basketball court, his jaw slackening just a fraction before he pulled it tight in a defensive grimace. He lowered the heavy cream-colored paper, his eyes darting frantically toward the stage where Maya stood under the hot theatrical spotlights.
Leo remained on the floor, propped up on his right elbow, his blue hoodie slightly rumpled from the shove. He watched Marcus with a gaze that carried no triumph, only a quiet, heavy exhaustion. The phones were still pointed at them, red recording dots blinking like tiny mechanical eyes.
“What is going on?” someone shouted from the sophomore bleachers, breaking the tense equilibrium.
Marcus did not answer. He slowly turned the paper over, as if expecting the ink to rearrange itself into something that made sense to his varsity-level worldview. His fingers crumpled the bottom edge of the official letterhead, leaving a permanent crease in the heavy cardstock.
On stage, Maya took a slow, deliberate breath, her eyes scanning the sea of students until they locked directly onto Marcus. She raised the microphone slightly, bringing it closer to her lips. The sound of her swallowing was magnified through the massive gymnasium speakers, a dry, nervous click that made several front-row students shift uncomfortably.
“The recipient of the Oakridge Foundation Presidential Fellowship,” Maya began, her voice steadying with every syllable, “for extraordinary contributions to academic research and community service…”
She paused, letting the silence stretch thin enough to snap. Marcus took a half-step forward, his heavy sneakers squeaking against the floor.
“Read it right,” Marcus barked, his voice cracking slightly on the final word, betraying a sudden, desperate panic that he tried to mask with a scowl.
Maya did not blink. She looked down at her own paper, then back up at Marcus, whose name was visibly absent from the document she held.

“The recipient,” Maya repeated, enunciating each word with chilling precision, “is Leo Vance.”
