Chapter 14 - The Darkness Beneath the Bleachers

The emergency exit signs glowed a harsh, chemical green against the sudden darkness of the gymnasium, casting long, fractured shadows across the pulled-out wooden bleachers. The air was cool and smelled faintly of dust and ozone. Coach Miller’s heavy footsteps crunched against the wooden floorboards as he moved toward the control panel beneath the lower section of the stands.

Leo stood near the free-throw line, balancing on his crutches, his phone screen illuminating his face with a pale, steady blue light. The hexadecimal data stream was still scrolling, though the transfer speed was dropping rapidly as the emergency power grid fought the unauthorized data bridge.

“The connection is dropping,” Leo called out, his voice echoing off the high ceiling rafters. “Port 8088 is closing down.”

Agent Harris walked behind him with his flashlight beam cutting a sharp white circle through the dim space, illuminating the heavy steel door that led down to the sub-basement electrical room. The padlock on the door had been freshly sheared off, the metal shackle lying on the floor like a discarded tooth.

“Someone was down here during the morning assembly,” Agent Harris said, kneeling to inspect the broken lock. “While everyone was watching Marcus push you into the bleachers.”

Leo adjusted his grip on his crutches, swinging his left leg forward as he approached the open doorway. The darkness inside the sub-basement smelled of warm copper and damp concrete. A single laptop sat on a wooden crate just inside the threshold, its screen glowing with a terminal window displaying the final percentages of the data transfer.

Coach Miller reached the electrical panel on the wall, throwing the main breaker lever downward with a heavy, metallic clank that shut off the last hum of the ventilation system.

The laptop screen flickered violently as the battery backup kicked in, displaying a final, blinking text prompt: Transfer complete. Node disengaged.

Leo stopped at the threshold, his eyes fixed on the illuminated screen. On the desktop background of the open laptop was a single text file, left deliberately unminimized for anyone to find.

“Don’t touch it, Leo,” Agent Harris warned, reaching out a hand to stop him. “It could be a booby-trapped script designed to wipe our forensic drives.”

“It’s not a script,” Leo said softly, pointing his crutch toward the screen. “It’s a directory listing.”

Coach Miller stepped into the sub-basement, shining his flashlight over the wooden crate. Beside the laptop sat a familiar green jacket—the exact duplicate of the one Leo wore, bearing the embroidered initials of an assistant athletic coach who hadn’t been seen on campus since the previous semester.

Leo leaned forward, reading the title of the top file in the open directory. It wasn’t a financial ledger or a grade sheet. It was a comprehensive list of every student who had applied for the district’s special needs accommodation fund over the past five years—including the allocation records for Leo’s own orthopedic medical grant.

Before Agent Harris could grab the laptop, the screen went completely black, and the built-in webcam indicator light blinked green twice in the dark room.
