Chapter 15 - The Final Architecture

The forensic terminal on the sub-basement floor gave a single, sharp beep before the battery died entirely, plunging the small concrete room into total, silent darkness. Agent Harris clicked on his heavy-duty flashlight, sweeping the beam across the empty wooden crate, the abandoned green jacket, and the discarded lock shackle.
“They anticipated the grid shutdown,” Agent Harris said, his voice hard and focused as he knelt beside the dead laptop. He pulled an insulated evidence bag from his jacket pocket and carefully lifted the machine by its rubber edges. “The data was mirrored to an off-site relay three minutes before we pulled the breaker.”
Leo stood quietly near the doorway, leaning on his crutches. The pale green light from the hallway emergency sign caught the edge of his blue hoodie as he looked down at the empty wooden crate where the laptop had rested.
“It wasn’t just about the financial grants, Agent Harris,” Leo said, his voice even and calm in the quiet space. “The accommodation fund records contain every medical waiver, every physical therapy schedule, and every diagnostic report submitted by students with disabilities in the district.”
Coach Miller gripped his flashlight tighter, his jaw muscles working beneath his weathered skin. “Why would anyone want to steal medical waiver records?”
“Because insurance fraud at the district level requires matching disability claims to institutional payouts,” Leo replied, turning slightly to face the two men. “Marcus was just the frontman for the athletic department. Someone higher up was using student medical profiles to balance the district’s quarterly risk assessments.”
