Chapter 9

Three days had passed since the arrest. The modern estate was quiet again, but it was a peaceful, restorative quiet. The half-eaten pastries and discarded coffee cups from the disastrous family brunch had long since been cleared away. The dining room was spotless, smelling faintly of lemon polish and fresh eucalyptus.
Clara stood at the kitchen island, rolling out cookie dough with Lily by her side. The ten-year-old was humming softly to herself, her varsity jacket hung neatly over the back of the kitchen chair.
"Aunt Clara, can we add extra chocolate chips?" Lily asked, looking up with flour dusted across her nose.
Clara smiled warmly, brushing a speck of flour from Lily’s cheek. "As many as you want, sweetie. Today is a celebration of new beginnings."
The doorbell chimed—the gentle, melodic chime that Clara actually recognized. She wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked to the entryway. Through the frosted glass sidelights, she saw a tall figure standing on the porch. It wasn’t a police officer, and it certainly wasn’t David or Helen.
Clara unlocked the door and pulled it open. Standing on the porch was Detective Sergeant Miller, accompanied by a well-dressed woman carrying a leather portfolio.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Vance," Officer Miller said politely, tipping his head. "I hope we’re not interrupting anything."
"Not at all, Detective," Clara replied, keeping her posture upright and professional. "Please, come in. Is there an update regarding the investigation?"
The woman accompanying him stepped forward, extending a hand. "I’m Sarah Lin, a court-appointed child advocate and family services supervisor. Officer Miller briefed me on the situation regarding Lily, and given the pending criminal charges against David Vance and Helen Vance, we need to formalize a permanent guardianship arrangement."
Clara’s heart skipped a beat, though her face remained an unreadable mask. She shook Sarah’s hand firmly. "I’ve already consulted with Marcus Vance regarding legal custody. Lily has been living with me primarily for the last six months anyway, while David drifted between apartments."

"We know," Sarah said, offering a reassuring smile. "Given your stable corporate career, the secure environment you’ve provided, and Lily’s expressed preference to remain with you, our office is prepared to fast-track your petition for full legal custody. We just need your signature on the preliminary intake forms."
Clara stepped aside, inviting them into the living room. "Let's sit down. I have all my financial and legal documentation ready."
