Chapter 6

A marked police cruiser rounded the corner of the suburban street, its overhead lights flashing a rhythmic blue and red against the modern glass facades of the neighboring homes. The cruiser slowed smoothly, coming to a halt directly behind David’s burgundy sedan, effectively boxing them in.
Officer Miller, a seasoned veteran with graying temples and a calm demeanor, stepped out of the driver’s side. He adjusted his belt, his eyes taking in the scene with practiced indifference: Clara standing firmly by her SUV, David looking panicked with his hands half-raised, and Helen trembling with furious indignation.
"Morning," Officer Miller said, walking up the driveway with a steady gait. He looked at Clara first, recognizing her professional attire and controlled posture. "Ms. Vance? I received a call from Marcus Vance regarding a fraudulent property transfer and potential harassment complaint."
"That's right, Officer," Clara said, maintaining a steady, professional tone. "My brother, David Vance, and my mother, Helen Vance, unlawfully entered my primary residence last night, accessed a private wall safe without authorization, and attempted to execute a fraudulent real estate transfer using forged digital documents."
"That is a complete lie!" Helen shouted, stepping aggressively toward the officer. "She’s vindictive, officer! She’s trying to punish our family because she hates that we had a closer relationship with her father!"
Officer Miller raised a single gloved hand, gesturing for Helen to halt her advance. "Ma'am, please step back and keep your hands where I can see them. We can discuss your grievances down at the precinct if necessary, but right now, I have a preliminary complaint for identity theft and forgery backed by digital metadata."
David’s shoulders slumped, the last vestige of his bravado evaporating into the morning air. He looked at Clara, his expression pleading. "Clara, please. Think about Lily. What happens to her if I’m arrested? What kind of aunt puts her own brother in handcuffs?"
"The kind of aunt who protects her niece from financial ruin and psychological abuse," Clara answered without flinching. She glanced back toward the SUV, ensuring Lily was looking out the side window rather than watching the confrontation directly. "You made your choices, David. You chose debt, deceit, and manipulation over honesty and hard work."

Officer Miller pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt loop. "Mr. Vance, I’m going to need you to turn around and place your hands behind your back. You’re being detained for questioning regarding suspected identity theft and fraudulent conveyance of real estate."
David didn't resist. He let out a long, shuddering breath, offering his wrists as the cold metal clicked into place. Helen let out a sharp cry of protest, rushing forward to grab the officer's arm, but another backup unit arrived just in time, stepping smoothly between Helen and the arresting officer.
