Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

Kristen’s breath caught in her throat. The ink on the legal document was barely dry, smelling sharply of a printer cartridge that had run out of magenta. She looked up at Marcus Vance, whose silhouette filled the frame of the black SUV window like a monolith of corporate cruelty.
"Tell my mother she can burn the house down and salt the earth, but I will never sign this," Kristen said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it surprised even herself.
Marcus didn't blink. He shifted the SUV into reverse, the tires crunching loudly over the gravel. "Suit yourself, Kristen. But remember, the holiday weekend is long, and courtrooms don't open again until Monday morning. You and those kids are entirely on your own out here."
With a sharp jerk of the steering wheel, he backed out, spraying gravel against the doors of Kristen’s sedan before speeding down the dark country road into the mist.
Kristen sat paralyzed for a long moment, listening to the heavy silence settle back over the property. Her phone was dead. The car battery was flat. The school where her children felt safe had apparently been reduced to ash, and her mother was actively waging a legal and psychological war to erase her existence.
"Mommy, are we going to freeze?" Maya whispered, her teeth chattering.
"No, sweetheart. We're going inside," Kristen said, her mind hardening into a diamond-sharp focus.
She killed the hazard lights to save what little juice the battery had left, gathered her children, and marched them back into the drafty rental house. She dragged a heavy oak dresser across the front entryway, barricading the door against any further uninvited guests. In the kitchen, she found a box of old birthday candles and a pack of matches in a junk drawer.
By the flickering yellow light of a single candle, Kristen sat at the scarred wooden table and opened her canvas tote. Buried beneath her spare sweaters and a packet of wet wipes was an old leather-bound journal belonging to her late grandfather—the one man in the family who had stood up to Eleanor before mysterious circumstances silenced him.

Kristen flipped the brittle pages until she stopped at an entry dated twenty years ago, detailing a secret trust fund and an adoption file that Eleanor had spent millions burying. But as she read the names on the faded ledger, she realized the devastating truth: the children Eleanor was trying to steal weren't just her grandchildren. They were the legal heirs to the entire estate, and Kristen was standing in the crosshairs of a generational conspiracy.
