Chapter 14 - The Boardroom Showdown

The glass-walled penthouse boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Vance & Miller Realty tower overlooked the gray sprawl of the city below. Sunlight was finally breaking through the heavy November clouds, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished mahogany conference table where twelve senior board members sat in stunned silence.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Eleanor sat at the head of the table in her immaculate cream cashmere sweater, her expression a mask of absolute coldness as she addressed the room. "The acquisition of the northern sector properties will proceed as scheduled, regardless of temporary family disruptions."

"I wouldn't count on that, Eleanor," a calm, resonant voice echoed from the doorway.

Kristen stepped into the boardroom, flanked by Detective Thomas Vance and two federal marshals in dark tactical suits. She wore a borrowed wool coat over her damp beige cardigan, her brown hair pulled back into a severe, unyielding bun. Behind her walked Leo and Maya, holding hands and looking up at the towering skyscrapers with wide, courageous eyes.

Eleanor stood up slowly, her face draining of all color. "Kristen. How dare you bring these children into a professional environment."

"This isn't a family dispute anymore, Mother," Kristen said, her voice steady and ringing clearly off the glass walls. She walked directly to the head of the table, placing her grandfather’s leather-bound journal right beside Eleanor’s gold-plated nameplate. "This is a federal audit."

Thomas Vance stepped forward, flashing a federal warrant. "Eleanor Miller, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and the orchestrated arson of historical residential properties."

Panic rippled through the board members. Marcus Vance bolted for the side exit, but a federal marshal blocked the door, hand resting firmly on his holster.

Eleanor’s cold exterior finally cracked. Her hands trembled as she clutched the edge of the mahogany table, staring at her daughter with a mixture of absolute fury and disbelief. "You're destroying everything I built for this family," she whispered, her voice finally breaking.

"You built nothing, Eleanor," Kristen replied, looking down at her mother with profound, unshakeable pity. "You only buried people."

As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut around Eleanor's wrists, Kristen turned around, knelt down, and pulled her children into a fierce, unbreakable embrace, knowing the nightmare was finally over.
