Chapter 13 - The Diner at Dawn

The interior of the neon-lit diner smelled of stale coffee, grease, and floor wax. Only two booths were occupied at this ungodly hour: a trucker nodding off over a cup of black coffee in the corner, and a tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal overcoat sitting in the center booth, watching the glass front doors with sharp, analytical eyes.

Kristen pushed open the door, her children huddled close beside her, shivering violently in their damp clothes. Detective Thomas Vance stood up immediately, his gaze locking onto the canvas tote bag clutched in Kristen’s white-knuckled grip.

"Mrs. Miller," Thomas said, stepping forward and flashing an open federal badge. "I’m Detective Vance. Sit down, let's get these kids some hot tea."

They slid into the vinyl booth. Thomas immediately signaled the exhausted waitress for three mugs of hot chocolate and a plate of scrambled eggs, before sliding a dry wool blanket across the table for Maya.

"Is it true? Do you have the charter?" Thomas asked quietly, leaning forward over the formica table.

Kristen reached into her tote, pulling out the water-damaged leather-bound journal and sliding it across the table. "Every single page. It details how Eleanor systematically forged my father's signature to empty the corporate trust twenty years ago."

Thomas opened the journal carefully, his eyes scanning the faded ink with professional intensity. A grim smile formed on his lips. "This is the missing link. My brother Marcus has been running interference for her real estate syndicate for a decade, but this... this is enough to freeze all of her corporate accounts before the morning board meeting."

Before Kristen could reply, the diner bell chimed sharply.

Marcus Vance walked through the front doors, his tailored overcoat immaculate, his expression cold and unreadable. He scanned the room, his eyes instantly locking onto Kristen and his estranged brother sitting across from her.

"Thomas," Marcus said smoothly, walking toward their booth with slow, deliberate strides. "You're trespassing outside your jurisdiction. And Kristen is currently violating a family court custody injunction."

Thomas stood up slowly, squaring his shoulders as he met his brother's icy glare. "Not anymore, Marcus. Federal jurisdiction supersedes local family court when there's an active RICO investigation into corporate kidnapping and arson."

Marcus didn't flinch, but a muscle twitched in his jaw. He looked past his brother at Kristen, his voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "You think a dusty ledger changes anything? Your mother owns half this county. By noon today, you won't even have a name left."
