Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Confrontation

The bright morning sunlight poured through the pristine kitchen windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Five-year-old Lily stood proudly in her yellow dress with white polka dots, her brown pigtails bouncing as she held up her pastel rainbow lunchbox. Her pink backpack rested against her small legs.
“My lunch is ready!” Lily announced cheerfully, her smile radiant.
Grandmother Clara stepped forward, her gray hair tied back neatly, wearing a floral patterned blouse. Without a word, Clara took the rainbow lunchbox, popped the latches, and tipped it upside down. The carefully prepared rice and vegetables tumbled straight into the metal trash can with a hollow thud.
Lily gasped, her wide eyes filling with shock as she stared at the empty container.
“Why?” Lily asked softly, her voice barely a whisper.
Tears immediately welled up, streaming down her flushed cheeks as her small lip began to tremble.
“I'm hungry,” Lily cried tearfully, her small frame shaking.
The heavy silence of the kitchen shattered as footsteps thudded across the hardwood floor. Mother Sarah and Father David rushed into the room, their faces etched with alarm. Sarah dropped to her knees, instantly wrapping her arms around the sobbing child. David marched straight toward the kitchen counter, his jaw clenched as he stared down at his mother, Clara.
“What happened?” Sarah demanded angrily, her voice shaking with a mixture of fury and disbelief as she pulled Lily closer to her chest.
David stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Sarah, his light blue button-up shirt straining against his broad chest. He glared at Clara, whose face remained an unreadable mask of cold, ancient stubbornness.
“Mother, explain yourself right now,” David said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with warning.
Clara slowly closed the empty rainbow lunchbox, the plastic snap echoing loudly in the tense room. She looked past David and Sarah, her eyes fixing coldly on the small pink backpack resting by the counter.
“You are feeding her poison,” Clara stated coldly, her voice devoid of any warmth or remorse.
Sarah froze mid-embrace, releasing Lily slightly to stare at her mother-in-law in absolute horror. David stepped back, a flicker of dark memory flashing across his eyes before he could hide it.
“What are you talking about, Clara?” David demanded, his voice cracking slightly.
Clara reached into the pocket of her brown skirt, pulled out a small, folded piece of yellowed paper, and dropped it onto the kitchen island.

“Look at the ingredients you bought yesterday, David,” Clara whispered, her eyes narrowing as she pointed a trembling finger at the paper. “It’s happening all over again.”
