Chapter 11 - The Poisoned Bloodline

The chilling revelation hung in the air like a physical weight. David pressed his back against the hallway wallpaper, sliding down slightly as his legs lost all their strength. His hands flew to his chest, clutching at his light blue button-up shirt as if he could already feel the ancient toxin gnawing at his ribs.

“No… that’s impossible,” David choked out, sweat beading on his forehead. “I’m fine. I’ve lived thirty-five years.”

“Your father’s blend was slow, David. It takes decades to settle in the cardiovascular tissue,” Clara explained smoothly, stepping closer to her crumbling son. She held out the leather journal, pointing to a medical chart drawn in fading ink on the final page. “Look at your sister. She reached ten years old before her heart gave out. You reached thirty-five. And Lily… sweet little Lily was given her first taste of the imported vegetables yesterday morning.”

Sarah felt her breath catch in her throat. A wave of suffocating nausea washed over her. She dropped to her knees, instantly wrapping her arms around Lily, pulling the little girl’s face into her shoulder so she couldn't hear the horrific conversation.

“You’re lying,” Sarah cried, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks as she glared at Clara. “You’re a sick, manipulative monster trying to destroy our family out of spite!”

Before Clara could reply, a loud, thunderous crash echoed from the front entryway. The police officers outside had finally breached the heavy iron front gate and were now slamming their heavy boots against the oak front door.

“Police! Open the door! Drop whatever you’re doing!” a muffled voice commanded from outside, accompanied by the splintering crack of wood splintering under a battering ram.

Hope flared in Sarah’s chest. The nightmare was almost over. The authorities were here to rescue them from this house of horrors.

Clara didn’t flinch at the sound of the battering ram. She merely sighed, closing the leather journal with a soft thud. She looked down at David, who was now gasping for breath on the floor, clutching his left arm in sudden, agonizing pain.

“They can break the door down, Sarah,” Clara whispered, her voice disturbingly tranquil as the police battered the wood again. “They can arrest me. But they can’t cure what’s already inside David’s heart. And they can’t wash the vegetables out of Lily’s stomach.”

David let out a sharp, ragged gasp, his body convulsing slightly as he collapsed onto his side on the hardwood floor. His eyes rolled back slightly, stark terror frozen in his gaze.

“Sarah…” David wheezed, stretching a trembling hand out toward his wife. “My chest… it burns.”

Sarah screamed, scrambling across the floor toward her husband, forgetting the gas, forgetting Clara, forgetting everything except the man she loved dying right in front of her eyes.

With one final, earth-shattering crash, the heavy oak front door burst open off its hinges, flying inward and kicking up a massive cloud of dust as heavily armed police officers poured into the hallway.

But as the smoke cleared and the officers rushed forward, the lead detective froze in absolute horror at what he saw resting on the entrance table right beside Clara’s hand.
