Chapter 5 - The Collapse and the Ultimatum

“Dad! Dad, look at me!” Mark screamed, dropping back to his knees and grabbing his father’s shoulders, shaking him frantically.

The light blue button-down shirt that Arthur wore suddenly seemed too large for his shrinking frame. There was no response. His breathing had stopped entirely, and the color in his skin was rapidly fading into a dull, waxy gray.

Eleanor didn't run to her husband. She stood frozen by the sideboard, her fingers clawing into the polished wood, watching the scene with a cold, detached horror that defied all human decency. “He brought this on himself,” she murmured, her voice hollow and unfeeling. “A lifetime of weakness, ending in a cowardly betrayal.”

“Call 911 right now, you heartless bitch!” Mark roared over his shoulder, his eyes bloodshot and blazing with tears. He ripped open Arthur’s shirt and immediately began pressing his hands against the old man's chest, performing frantic chest compressions. “Elena, grab the phone! Call an ambulance! Now!”

Elena stood like a statue amidst the wreckage of the dining room. Her mind was shattering into a million pieces. On the floor, her husband’s father—the only person who had tried to show her mercy and reveal the truth—was dying. In the corner, the woman who had tormented her for years and stolen her biological identity stood watching with cold indifference. And the man she loved, the man whose arms she had sought comfort in for half a decade, was inextricably linked to the very monsters who had destroyed her family.

She didn't move toward the phone. Instead, she slowly backed away toward the front entryway, her eyes never leaving Eleanor’s face.

“Elena, please! Help me save him!” Mark cried out, his voice cracking with desperation as he pushed down on his father's chest, sweat pouring down his forehead. “Don't just stand there!”

“You want me to help save the family that murdered my parents and lied to my face every single day?” Elena’s voice was venomous, laced with a cold, terrifying calm that terrified Mark more than her tears would have. “Let him die, Mark. Just like they let my father die thirty years ago.”

“Elena, no! We can fix this! We can start over!” Mark pleaded, tears streaming freely down his cheeks as he continued CPR, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

Eleanor finally snapped out of her trance, stepping forward with a malicious sneer twisting her lips, even as her husband lay dying feet away. “You think you can just walk out of here and expose us, girl? You have no proof. No documents. The adoption papers were burned decades ago. If you leave this house, I will make sure the police arrest you for breaking and entering, and I will destroy Mark’s life alongside yours.”

Elena didn't blink. She reached behind her, her fingers wrapping around the brass knob of the front door. She pulled it open, letting the cool evening air rush into the stifling, blood-soaked dining room.

“Keep your secrets, Eleanor,” Elena whispered, stepping out onto the porch. “Because I’m going to exhume every single one of them.”

She slammed the heavy oak door behind her, locking Mark inside with his dying father and his sociopathic mother. But as she ran down the driveway toward her car, her phone buzzed violently in her pocket. She pulled it out with shaking hands and stared at the glowing screen.

It was an unknown number, and the text message waiting for her contained a single, chilling photograph of her childhood home in Vermont—taken just ten minutes ago—along with four words that made her blood run entirely cold:
