Chapter 3 - The Chest Pain and the Confession

“Dad!” Mark shouted, dropping to his knees beside Arthur’s chair as the old man struggled for air.

Elena reacted instantly, setting aside her own shock and trauma. She grabbed a clean glass of water from the table and held it to Arthur’s lips, while her hands moved with practiced efficiency to loosen the top button of his light blue shirt. “Mark, call an ambulance! His pulse is racing, and he’s turning gray!”

“No ambulance,” Eleanor hissed, standing up so abruptly her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. Her face was deathly pale, stripped of all color, but her eyes burned with a manic, protective intensity. “An ambulance means police, hospital reports, nosy doctors asking questions we don't need to answer. He’s just having an anxiety attack brought on by his own foolishness. Give him his medicine from the sideboard drawer and let him catch his breath.”

Mark looked up from his father, his eyes blazing with a mixture of terror and absolute betrayal as he stared at his own mother. “Are you out of your mind? He’s having a cardiac event, and you’re worried about paperwork? You care more about your precious secrets than your own husband’s life!”

“I care about protecting this family from the poison your father is about to spew!” Eleanor yelled back, taking a step toward them. “You have no idea what lies he’s concocting in that failing brain of his. He’s delusional, Mark! He’s always lived in a fantasy world!”

“I am not delusional, Eleanor,” Arthur wheezed, gasping for air as Elena gently rubbed his back. The old man reached out with a trembling, spotted hand and gripped Elena’s wrist with surprising strength. His cloudy eyes locked onto hers, filled with an urgent, desperate plea. “Listen to me... before it’s too late. Your maiden name... Taylor... it’s not the name you were given at birth.”

Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. “What did you say?” she whispered, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of her neck. “My name is Elena Taylor. My parents raised me in Vermont until they passed away in the car crash when I was ten. Everyone in town knew them.”

“Your parents in Vermont were adoptive parents, dear,” Arthur whispered, coughing weakly as a drop of blood appeared at the corner of his mouth. “Eleanor arranged it. She paid them to take you away, to hide you where Mark would never find you when you both grew up. But fate is a cruel architect... you and Mark crossed paths anyway.”

Mark slowly stood up from the floor, towering over his mother, his face drained of all color. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire life burn to ash. He turned to Eleanor, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet menace. “Is this true?”

Eleanor stood frozen, trapped in the corner of the dining room by her husband’s confession and her son’s accusatory glare. She lifted her chin defiantly, refusing to show weakness, but her trembling hands betrayed her. “I did what had to be done to protect our legacy,” she spat out. “And if you think that’s shocking, wait until you find out who her real father actually is.”
