Chapter 4 - The Legacy of Deception

The silence that followed Eleanor’s venomous admission was heavier than the spilled soup, suffocating every person in the room. Mark stared at his mother as if she were a total stranger, a monster wearing the face of the woman who had raised him.
“My real father?” Elena repeated, her voice cracking as the reality of her entire existence fractured into dust. She looked from Eleanor to Arthur, her blue eyes wide with mounting terror. “If my parents in Vermont were adoptive... and you had me hidden away... who am I? Who are my real parents?”
Arthur closed his eyes for a long moment, a tear cutting a clean path through the wrinkles on his weathered cheek. When he opened them, he didn't look at Eleanor; he looked straight at Mark, as if passing down a curse he had carried for decades.
“Your real father, Elena... was my brother. David.”
Mark staggered backward, his boots hitting the shards of broken porcelain on the floor, but he didn't even notice. “Uncle David? But Uncle David died in the lake accident thirty years ago! Before I was even born!”
“He didn't die in an accident, Mark,” Eleanor spat, her voice dripping with venom as she finally stopped trying to hide the truth. Since the cat was out of the bag, she seemed determined to own the carnage. “David tried to take the family company and run off with a local woman from the wrong side of the tracks—Elena’s biological mother. We couldn't let them destroy everything your grandfather built. So Arthur and I... we cleaned up the mess.”
Elena gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth to stifle a scream. The horror of what she was hearing washed over her in sickening waves. “You... you murdered them? My parents?”
“We didn't murder anyone!” Eleanor snapped defensively, though her eyes darted away guiltily. “David’s boat capsized in the storm. It was a tragedy. But we did make sure that the child they left behind—you—was erased from our bloodline so you could never come back to claim what was supposedly yours. I paid a doctor to alter the adoption records, and I paid a couple in Vermont to take you far away. It was a business transaction. And it would have stayed buried if you hadn't charmed your way into my son’s life at that university library five years ago!”
Mark looked at Elena, his expression a chaotic storm of grief, shock, and profound, agonizing guilt. He reached out to touch her arm, his fingers trembling. “Elena... I swear to God, I didn't know. When we met... I had no idea who your family was, or what my mother had done...”
“Don't touch me, Mark,” Elena whispered, pulling away from him as if his touch burned her skin. Her voice was ice-cold, stripped of all warmth. She looked at the man she loved, realizing that every anniversary, every sweet memory, every holiday spent in this house was built on a foundation of stolen identity and buried corpses. “You brought me here. To the house of the people who stole my life.”

Before Mark could plead his case, Arthur let out a sharp gasp, his body going completely limp in the dining chair as his eyes rolled back, his head dropping heavily against his chest.
