Chapter 9

To help Elena reintegrate into normal social activities without the suffocating pressure of large public events, Dr. Sarah Lin suggested enrolling her in a small, private weekend art workshop hosted by a renowned local sculptor named Clara Martinez. Clara operated a quiet, sunlit studio on the edge of the historic art district, surrounded by climbing ivy and antique terracotta pots.
On a crisp Saturday morning, David drove Elena to the studio. While Elena happily joined a small group of children sculpting clay animals at a low wooden table, David sat on a weathered bench outside in the courtyard, reviewing corporate emails on his tablet. The heavy oak door of the studio was propped open, allowing the soft sounds of classical piano music and children’s laughter to drift out into the courtyard.
About an hour into the session, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb across the narrow cobblestone street. David didn't think much of it until the rear door opened and a woman stepped out wearing a wide-brimmed sunhat and dark oversized sunglasses. Even with the disguise, David recognized the distinctive posture and cold elegance immediately: it was Claire.
David stood up instantly, his tablet slipping slightly in his hand. He stepped toward the iron courtyard gate, his heart hammering against his ribs. Claire was in direct violation of the five-hundred-foot restraining order, and her presence here, near an art class attended by children, crossed every conceivable boundary of safety.
Before David could reach the street, two plainclothes private security operatives he had hired to discreetly monitor the perimeter materialized from the alcove next to the studio entrance. They moved with swift, professional efficiency, stepping directly into Claire’s path just as she reached the edge of the cobblestone sidewalk.
Claire stopped short, lifting her sunglasses just enough to reveal her glaring, furious eyes. She hissed something venomous at the operatives, her gloved hands clenching into tight fists at her sides. Through the open studio door, David saw Elena look up from her clay sculpture, her eyes widening in sudden, startled recognition.
“Sir, step back inside the perimeter,” one of the security agents called out firmly to David, while his partner engaged Claire, flashing local police dispatch credentials and notifying them of an immediate restraining order violation.

Claire realized she had been entirely cornered. With sirens wailing faintly in the distance, she spun around on her high heels, jumped back into the black sedan, and barked an order to the driver. The vehicle screeched away from the curb, burning rubber against the ancient cobblestones as it vanished around the corner just seconds before a marked police cruiser arrived on the scene.
David rushed inside the studio to find Elena trembling slightly, dropping her sculpting tool onto the table. He pulled her into a tight, protective embrace, whispering soothing reassurances into her hair. The incident proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Claire was growing desperate, erratic, and increasingly dangerous. The legal net was tightening around her, but cornered predators often strike out with reckless abandon.
