Chapter 8

Three days after the tense confrontation at David’s office, a formal summons arrived from the district attorney’s office. Marcus Vance and David met with Senior Assistant District Attorney Evelyn Morales in her cluttered, book-lined office downtown. Evelyn was a veteran prosecutor known for her tenacity in prosecuting white-collar crime and domestic endangerment cases. She wore a sharp charcoal pantsuit and had a reputation for reading every single document in a case file twice.

Evelyn closed the thick manila folder resting on her desk and looked directly at David. “Mr. Vance, I’ve reviewed the financial audits submitted by Marcus, along with the forensic recovery of the digital communications from Mrs. Vance’s tablet. We also have the unedited high-definition security camera footage from the gala.”

She leaned back in her leather chair, lacing her fingers together. “I am formally upgrading the charges against Claire Vance from simple domestic endangerment and civil fraud to second-degree attempted assault of a minor, alongside felony grand larceny and obstruction of justice. This is no longer just a messy divorce proceeding. This is a criminal prosecution.”

David exhaled a breath he felt like he had been holding for weeks. Marcus Vance nodded approvingly, adjusting his glasses. “The timeline of asset transfers we uncovered directly aligns with the preparation of the false medical documentation Claire attempted to introduce regarding Elena’s allergy history. She was building a paper trail to claim the child was chronically ill, which would have given her legal guardianship over medical decisions if you were incapacitated.”

The chilling depth of Claire’s long-term plan became entirely apparent. It wasn't just a sudden malicious impulse at a party; it was a cold, calculated coup designed to systematically isolate and eliminate any obstacle between Claire and David’s substantial estate.

“What happens next?” David asked, keeping his voice steady for Elena’s sake, even though her safety was his constant priority.

“We issue a bench warrant for her arrest,” Evelyn stated plainly, picking up her desk phone. “Her defense team tried to file a motion to quash the preliminary findings based on jurisdictional technicalities, but Judge Harrison dismissed it ten minutes ago. We anticipate she will attempt to flee the jurisdiction once she realizes the warrants are active. We’ve coordinated with federal transit authorities to flag her passports.”

As David walked out of the municipal building into the brisk afternoon air, he felt a powerful wave of relief wash over him, tempered by a sharp edge of caution. The legal system was finally moving with crushing momentum, but until Claire was safely behind bars, they could not let down their guard. He pulled out his phone, called home to check in with the private security team stationed at the estate, and confirmed that Elena’s upcoming school schedule remained entirely secure and undisturbed.
