Chapter 4

The courtroom was cold, smelling of floor wax and old paper, starkly contrasting with the warmth of the spring afternoon outside. Judge Harrison sat behind a towering mahogany bench, reading through the comprehensive dossier Marcus Vance and David’s lead attorney, Rebecca Sloane, had compiled over forty-eight hours. Claire sat across the aisle, flanked by a high-priced defense attorney named Julian Vance, who looked perpetually bored and excessively groomed. Claire had abandoned her beige satin dress for a conservative navy pantsuit, trying desperately to project an image of an aggrieved, misunderstood homemaker.

Rebecca Sloane stood up, adjusting her glasses before addressing the bench. “Your Honor, we are presenting not merely irreconcilable differences, but documented financial embezzlement of a minor's protected trust fund, alongside verified photographic and video evidence of premeditated child endangerment resulting in anaphylactic risk.”

Julian Vance stood smoothly, offering a practiced, dismissive smile. “Your Honor, my client categorically denies these sensationalized claims. The video footage from the gala has been taken completely out of context by an emotional father undergoing a bitter separation. The label swap was a harmless practical joke that got blown out of proportion by an overly imaginative child and an anxious spouse.”

Elena, sitting quietly in the back row between David and Dr. Lin, flinched at the phrase 'overly imaginative child.' David squeezed her hand firmly, offering quiet reassurance. Before Judge Harrison could respond, Rebecca Sloane walked over to the clerk’s desk and submitted a flash drive containing supplementary digital files recovered from Claire’s personal tablet—files that had been automatically backed up to the household cloud server.

“We have retrieved deleted text messages between Mrs. Vance and an unknown associate,” Rebecca stated clearly, her voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. “Messages explicitly discussing how to induce minor allergic symptoms in the child to make her appear sickly and unmanageable, thereby justifying institutionalization.”

The courtroom murmured softly at the revelation. Julian Vance frowned, leaning over to whisper urgently to Claire, whose composed facade finally shattered, revealing a flash of genuine panic in her dark eyes. Judge Harrison held up a hand, silencing the room instantly. He ordered a formal forensic review of the newly submitted digital communications and granted an immediate expansion of the restraining order, prohibiting Claire from coming within five hundred feet of Elena, David, or any of their residences and business properties.

As they left the courthouse through a swarm of local reporters and camera crews, David kept his arm firmly around Elena’s shoulders, guiding her into the back of a waiting sedan. The legal battle was far from over, but the immediate threat had been legally neutralized. They were finally reclaiming control of their lives, step by deliberate step, refusing to let fear dictate their future.
