Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest at the Door

The doorbell chimed a second time, cutting through the heavy silence of the dining room like a knife. Nobody moved. Mark stood frozen beside the ruined table, his eyes fixed on Clara in demand of an answer she refused to give. The stranger kept his arm firmly around Evelyn, shielding his mother from the suffocating toxicity of the room. Leo and Maya clung to each other near the side table.
“Clara,” Mark said slowly, his voice eerily calm. “Are we expecting someone else, or is there another piece of our marriage built on a lie?”
Clara swallowed hard, her mouth tasting of ash. She couldn’t move toward the door. Her legs felt like lead. The doorbell rang a third time, longer and more insistent.
“I’ll get it,” the stranger said, his jaw tight. He guided Evelyn gently toward a chair by the side table, letting her sit down away from the broken porcelain and red stains, before striding out of the dining room and down the hall.
The family in the dining room stood in agonizing suspense. They heard the front door open, followed by the murmur of a deep, unfamiliar voice and the rustle of a heavy winter coat. Footsteps approached the dining room threshold once again, heavier and more deliberate this time.
A tall man in a dark wool overcoat stepped into the room. He held a weathered leather briefcase in one hand and a manila envelope in the other. He looked around the table, taking in the ruined cranberry sauce, the crying children, and the fractured family dynamics with clinical detachment.
“Good afternoon,” the man said smoothly, his eyes resting directly on Clara. “I’m Agent Vance from the state probate office. I’m here regarding the emergency audit filed against this property this morning.”
Clara’s knees buckled. She reached out and grabbed the back of a chair to keep from collapsing to the floor. The green sweater she wore felt soaked in sweat.
Mark stared at the investigator, then back at his wife. The betrayal in his eyes hardened into something cold and unyielding.
“An audit?” Mark asked, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. “What kind of audit?”
Agent Vance stepped further into the room, pulling a folded document from the manila envelope.

“An investigation into fraudulent asset seizure, tax evasion, and the illegal displacement of the legal property holder, Evelyn Vance,” the agent replied clearly. “And Mrs. Clara Miller, you are legally required to answer a few questions immediately.”
