Chapter 4 - The Sound of Breaking Glass

Clara opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape her lips, the heavy ceramic bowl of cranberry sauce slipped from Evelyn’s trembling fingers.
The sound of shattering porcelain echoed through the dining room like a gunshot. Deep red sauce splashed across the polished mahogany table, dripping slowly onto the autumn leaves and staining the white linen runner like fresh blood. The children gasped, Maya jumping back in fright while Leo stared wide-eyed at the spreading crimson puddle.
Evelyn stood frozen, looking down at the broken pieces scattered among the gourds and candles. Tears finally spilled over her wrinkled eyelids, running down her cheeks in quiet defeat.
“I’m sorry,” Evelyn whispered, her voice breaking entirely. “I’m so clumsy. I’ve always been in the way, haven’t I?”
Mark dropped the legal document back onto the table, ignoring the spreading mess. He turned his back on Clara, running a hand through his hair in sheer disbelief. The illusion of the perfect Thanksgiving dinner was shattered beyond repair. The turkey was untouched, the wine unpoured, and the underlying rot of the family had finally broken through the surface.
The stranger stepped forward, ignoring the broken porcelain, and placed a gentle hand on his mother’s frail shoulder. He cast a murderous glare at Clara.
“Look what you’ve done to her,” the stranger snarled, his voice thick with repressed fury. “You treat her like a stray dog in her own home, and for what? To impress your wealthy friends from the country club who don’t even know your real last name?”
Clara finally snapped. The calm, icy exterior she had maintained cracked wide open.
“You have no right to come here!” Clara screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria as she pointed a shaking finger at her brother. “You walked away twenty years ago! You left me to deal with the debts, the failing farm, the endless hospital bills! I saved what was left while you were nowhere to be found!”
“By forging my signature?” her brother shot back, stepping closer until they were mere inches apart.
Mark turned sharply, his eyes narrowing as he looked between the siblings. “What debts? Clara, what are you talking about? You said your family was wealthy when we met.”
Clara froze. The blood rushed in her ears. She had kept that secret hidden from Mark since the day they married, believing he only loved her for her supposed pedigree.
