Chapter 1 - The Separate Place

The dining room smelled of roasted turkey, cloves, and heavy, suffocating silence. Outside the tall windows, pale November sunlight filtered through bare branches, casting long, fractured shadows across the polished mahogany table. The centerpiece of autumn leaves and gourds framed the ceramic bowl of cranberry sauce, its deep red surface gleaming under the amber chandelier.
Clara stood by the head of the table, her blonde hair pulled back into a tight, immaculate knot. She smoothed the front of her forest green sweater with trembling fingers, her eyes locked on the elderly woman standing near the doorway. Grandmother Evelyn gripped the rim of a heavy glass bowl, her white hair framing a face etched with decades of quiet endurance. She wore a maroon cardigan over a matching shirt and a dark skirt, her posture rigid.
Leo, the young boy with short brown hair and a dark blue sweater over a plaid shirt, sat motionless in his chair. He stared down at his empty plate, then up at his mother.
Clara broke the silence, her voice clipped and devoid of holiday warmth.
“Your place is over there.”
Evelyn stopped walking. The kitchen door behind her remained half-open, letting in a draft of cold air that made the autumn leaves on the table rustle. Evelyn’s gaze shifted from Clara to the small card resting beside a side table in the far corner, away from the warmth of the main gathering.
Evelyn swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly as she looked around the room.
“You set a separate place for me?”
The silence in the room grew heavier, suffocating every breath. Leo stood up slowly, his small hands gripping the edge of the table as he looked up at his grandmother with pleading eyes.
“Why can’t grandma sit with us?”
At the opposite end of the mahogany table, Maya, the young girl with dark hair and a dark dress, stood up abruptly. Her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. Tears welled in her eyes, but she held her chin high, her voice cutting through the tension with fierce loyalty.
“I’m sitting with grandma too.”

Before Clara could answer Maya, the heavy front door downstairs clicked open with a loud, echoing snap, followed by footsteps and a low, unfamiliar voice calling out a name nobody in the house possessed.
