Chapter 3

Sarah’s arms trembled as she maintained the awkward, desperate hold around Chloe’s waist. The little girl’s body had grown heavier, her struggles turning from frantic thrashing to weak, rhythmic twitches as oxygen deprivation began to take its toll. The golden candlelight flickered against the wallpaper, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock the horrific reality unfolding in the dining room.
"Arthur, help me!" Sarah choked out, her voice fracturing as she felt Chloe’s weight sag further. "We have to get her to the floor. We have to clear her airway right now, or we are going to lose her."
Arthur snapped out of his paralyzed shock, moving with sudden, desperate urgency. He dropped to his knees beside his wife and daughter, his hands hovering uncertainly before he firmly placed them over Sarah’s, pressing upward into Chloe’s abdomen with measured, forceful thrusts. "Come on, sweetheart. Stay with us. Daddy's right here," he whispered, a tear finally escaping his eye and tracing a hot path down his cheek.
Clara stood rigidly over them, her hands crossed over her grey lace top. Her face was an unreadable mask of stubborn pride and deeply buried grief. She refused to look at the struggling child, instead fixing her gaze entirely on the jar of peanut butter resting on the silver platter. To Clara, that jar represented something far older and more twisted than a simple baking ingredient or a cruel prank. It was a relic of a past she had spent decades trying to control, a bitter anchor to a memory that the rest of the family had long since tried to bury.
In the background, Leo remained frozen, his eyes wide with a terrifying maturity that no twelve-year-old should ever possess. He remembered the specific look in his grandmother’s eyes when she pulled the jar from the pantry earlier that afternoon—not malicious, but disturbingly detached, as if she were executing a long-overdue duty rather than preparing a birthday party.

With a sharp, hacking cough, Chloe suddenly expelled a thick lump of sticky, peanut-butter-laced cake batter onto the polished hardwood floor. She gasped, sucking in a massive, ragged lungful of air, her chest heaving violently as she began to sob into Sarah’s beige shirt.
Sarah wept openly, burying her face in Chloe’s curly hair, pressing kiss after frantic kiss to her damp forehead. Arthur let out a long, shuddering breath, slumping backward onto his heels, his hands shaking uncontrollably as the adrenaline began to recede, leaving behind a cold, terrifying void of unanswered questions.
