Chapter 1

The dining room chandelier cast a warm, golden glow over the mahogany table, illuminating the six lit candles on Chloe’s pink frosted birthday cake. Seven-year-old Chloe wore a sparkling silver dress and a matching party hat, her blue eyes wide with excitement as she prepared to make her wish. Standing directly behind her, Sarah wore a simple beige linen shirt, her hands resting gently on her daughter’s shoulders. Across the table, Arthur, dressed in a light-blue cotton shirt, smiled proudly while their twelve-year-old son, Leo, leaned against the bookshelf in the background, arms crossed and watching with an indifferent teenage gaze. At the head of the table stood Clara, the grandmother, elegant in her grey lace top, holding the gleaming silver dome lid of the family’s heirloom serving platter.
The festive atmosphere shattered in an instant. Chloe’s hands flew to her tiny throat, her fingers clawing desperately at her skin as her face flushed a terrifying shade of crimson. The breath caught in her windpipe with a dry, agonizing wheeze.
"Mommy, I can't breathe!" Chloe gasped, her voice strangled and small, panic radiating from her wide eyes.
Sarah reacted on pure maternal instinct, yanking Chloe backward against her chest and wrapping her arms tightly around the child’s waist in an instinctive Heimlich maneuver, her own breath hitching in pure terror. "Arthur, do something! Call someone!" she cried out, her voice cracking as she squeezed, but Chloe’s airway remained completely sealed shut.

Beside them, Clara moved with startling speed for a woman her age. With a sharp, practiced motion, she whipped the heavy metal dome lid off the silver platter. Arthur stared in absolute shock, his mouth parting as he froze, utterly paralyzed by the sudden emergency unfolding before his eyes. Leo pushed off the bookshelf, his casual posture vanishing as he took a terrified step forward.
Clara’s wrinkled hands reached down not for a phone, not for a medical kit, but straight onto the silver tray. Resting there in plain sight was an ordinary, store-bought jar of creamy peanut butter, its safety seal already broken. Clara gripped the jar with firm, unyielding fingers, her expression completely detached from the sheer panic gripping the rest of the room. She twisted the lid off with a sharp pop, her eyes narrowing as she looked down at her suffocating granddaughter, entirely refusing to acknowledge the mounting dread suffocating the air around them.
