Chapter 12

By late afternoon, the Victorian estate was entirely empty of its dark history. The estate liquidators had hauled away the heavy, oppressive furniture, leaving behind echoing rooms flooded with clean, golden autumn sunlight. Arthur stood in the middle of the grand living room, looking out the massive bay windows toward the overgrown garden where he and Lily had once been forbidden to play without supervision.

Leo and Chloe walked in, carrying a final box of old photo albums they had rescued from the attic. Chloe looked up at her father, her pink party hat long since packed away, wearing a simple blue sweater that matched her brother’s.

"Are we really never coming back here, Daddy?" Chloe asked, clutching her sketchbook tightly to her chest.

Arthur knelt down, wrapping both of his children in a warm, protective embrace. "Never, sweetie," Arthur promised softly, resting his chin on Chloe’s curly hair. "This house belongs to the past now. Our future is back home, where there's warmth, and laughter, and zero peanut butter anywhere near your birthday cake."

Leo grinned, adjusting his shoulders proudly. "And if anyone ever tries to sneak weird frosting into our house again, I'm the official food inspector," he declared heroically.

Sarah walked over, joining the embrace and resting her hands on both of her children’s backs. The warmth of her touch grounded them all, sealing the circle of love and safety they had fought so hard to protect. The terrifying trauma of Chloe’s birthday had nearly torn them apart, but in facing the darkness together, they had forged an unbreakable bond that no amount of old iron or rigid tradition could ever break.

They walked out the front door together, the heavy oak panels swinging shut behind them for the very last time. Arthur pulled the massive brass key from the lock, pocketed it, and tossed it into a metal recycling bin parked by the driveway. They climbed back into their car, leaving the dark estate behind them as they drove back toward the bright, welcoming light of their true home.
