Chapter 7

The Manhattan Club occupied the top three floors of a limestone neo-Gothic skyscraper, a bastion of old-money discretion where deals worth billions were whispered over single-malt scotch. Valeria stepped out of the private elevator wearing a sleek, tailored midnight-blue pantsuit that commanded immediate authority. Her long dark hair was styled in a sharp, elegant chignon, and her white watch caught the subdued amber light of the chandelier.

Marcus Vance escorted her through the velvet-roped foyer toward a private corner table overlooking the river. Arthur Sterling stood waiting, rising respectfully as his daughter approached. He looked distinguished and resolute, a titan of industry who had spent decades outmaneuvering rivals.

"You look like you belong here," Arthur said, kissing her cheek warmly.

"I've spent too many years hiding in the kitchen of a suburban townhouse pretending to be someone I'm not," Valeria replied, taking her seat.

As they reviewed the preliminary restructuring documents for the acquired subsidiary, a sudden commotion at the entrance of the club interrupted the quiet hum of conversation. A disheveled figure was arguing heatedly with the security detail.

Julian Davis, his suit jacket rumpled, his hair untidy, and his face pale with desperation, was attempting to force his way past the velvet ropes.

"I need to speak with Mr. Sterling!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with panic as two security guards firmly blocked his path. "Just five minutes! He knows why I'm here!"

The entire dining room went dead silent. Heads turned toward the disturbance, expressions of annoyance and disdain rippling across the faces of the city's elite.

Arthur didn't even look up from his document. He simply raised a hand, signaling Marcus Vance.

"Handle it, Marcus," Arthur said quietly.

Vance nodded and walked away from the table toward the commotion. But before Vance could reach the guards, Julian spotted Valeria sitting openly at the corner table. His eyes went wide with frantic realization, and he broke past the remaining guard with a sudden burst of adrenaline.

"Valeria!" Julian cried out, lunging toward their table before security tackled him to the Persian rug. "Valeria, please! You have to call them off! They've frozen every account I have! I can't even pay my legal fees! They're indicting me on wire fraud!"

Valeria slowly set down her pen. She turned her head and looked down at her ex-husband pinned to the floor by two professional security guards. Her expression was entirely devoid of anger, pity, or satisfaction. It was simply blank.

"You chose this path, Julian," Valeria said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "You built a house of cards on lies, and now you're shocked that a slight breeze knocked it down."
