Chapter 11

The air in the courtroom grew suffocatingly heavy as the prosecutor methodically read through the charges. Page after page of financial transactions, offshore routing codes, and forged compliance logs were projected onto the large digital screens facing the gallery.
Julian kept his head bowed, staring rigidly at the polished wooden table in front of him. Every time his name was mentioned in connection with a new felony, his shoulders twitched involuntarily. He had spent his entire adult life climbing the corporate ladder through deceit, backstabbing, and parasitic charm, believing himself to be the smartest man in any room. Now, stripped of his title, his money, and his freedom, he looked like a frightened child caught in a storm of his own making.
Judge Evelyn Vance adjusted her reading glasses, her stern gaze sweeping over the defense table before resting squarely on Julian.
"Mr. Davis," the judge said, her voice echoing sharply in the quiet room. "Your court-appointed counsel has indicated an intent to enter a plea of guilty on all counts in exchange for a sentencing recommendation. Is that your understanding?"
Julian swallowed hard, his mouth dry. He looked up slowly, casting one last desperate glance toward the front row of the gallery where Valeria sat. He opened his mouth, hoping against hope for a shred of mercy, a flicker of the compassion she had shown him during their years of marriage.
Valeria simply stared back, her expression carved from ice. She did not hate him; hate required an emotional investment she was no longer willing to waste on a parasite. She was simply observing the inevitable collapse of a fraud.
Julian’s shoulders slumped entirely. He turned back to the bench, his voice barely audible above the low hum of the courtroom ventilation.
"Yes, Your Honor," Julian whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Guilty."
A collective murmur rippled through the press gallery behind them. Flashbulbs flared furiously.
Clara, seated at the secondary defense table with her own attorney, panicked visibly at Julian’s confession. She half-rose from her chair, her voice cutting sharply across the room.
"He's lying!" Clara screamed, her composure completely shattering. "He planned the shell companies! I was just a signature! He forced me to sign those documents under threat of—"

"Silence!" Judge Evelyn Vance banged her gavel with a force that rattled the microphones. "One more outburst from this defendant, and I will hold her in contempt and double her remand period. Sit down, Ms. Sterling."
Clara sank back into her seat, trembling violently, burying her face in her hands as silent, bitter tears streamed down her cheeks. The reality that her ambition had trapped her in a federal cage was finally sinking in.
