Chapter 12

By late afternoon, the arraignment concluded, and the defendants were remanded back to federal custody without bail. The heavy oak doors of the courtroom swung shut behind the marshals as they led Julian and Clara away down the subterranean corridor.
Valeria walked out into the bright afternoon sunlight of Foley Square, flanked by her father and Marcus Vance. The chaotic hum of downtown Manhattan traffic felt entirely different today—less like a roaring monster to be feared, and more like a vibrant canvas waiting to be painted.
"It's over," Arthur said softly, putting a protective arm around his daughter's shoulders. "The legal proceedings will take their course, but your name and your reputation are completely cleared."
"It's not just about being cleared, Dad," Valeria replied, looking up at the towering glass and steel monoliths piercing the skyline. "It's about knowing I don't need anyone's permission to take up space in this city."
Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding out a sleek leather portfolio bearing the embossed gold crest of Sterling Holdings.
"The emergency board meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at eight a.m.," Vance said professionally. "Your seat at the head of the philanthropic redevelopment division is fully ratified. The press release has already been approved by your father."
Valeria took the portfolio, feeling the solid, genuine weight of it in her hands. This wasn't a gift handed to her out of pity; it was a position earned through her own forensic brilliance and unshakable resilience.
"I'll be there," Valeria said with a confident smile.
Arthur’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his expression tightened into a curious frown.
"What is it?" Valeria asked, sensing his hesitation.

"That was prison administration," Arthur said slowly, looking between Valeria and Marcus. "Julian refused his meal and requested an immediate, supervised visit with you. He claims he has something vital to surrender regarding Robert Vance’s hidden personal accounts—assets that haven't been frozen yet."
Valeria stopped walking on the stone steps of the courthouse. She turned her head back toward the massive granite facade of the federal detention center. The temptation to hear what Julian had to say flickered briefly in her mind, but she instantly recognized it for what it was: one final, pathetic attempt to claw his way back into her orbit using information as currency.
