Chapter 2 - Shadows Beneath the Floorboards

The kitchen door clicked shut with a muffled thud, cutting off the dim light that had spilled from the hallway. Toby grabbed the edge of the dining table, his knuckles turning chalk-white as the strange, rhythmic scraping noise grew louder beneath their feet. It sounded like metal dragging slowly across dry earth—a deliberate, heavy crawl that seemed to follow a predetermined path directly beneath the spot where Lily sat.
"Mom, what is that?" Toby whispered, his voice trembling as he looked up at Elena, who stood frozen in the doorway, her white blazer looking like a beacon of panic in the dim room.
"Nothing," Elena muttered, though her eyes were darting wildly around the room, refusing to meet her son's frightened gaze. She forced her face into a rigid mask of calm, stepping forward to pull Lily back from the glass bowl. "Come away from the table, Lily. Don't touch anything. Don't even look at it."
Lily sniffled, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her light blue dress. "Is Daddy mad at us because of what happened to the cellar, Mom?"
Elena flinched as if she had been physically struck. A sharp intake of breath hissed through her teeth. She dropped to her knees, grabbing Lily by the shoulders with a grip that was almost bruising in its intensity. "Never mention the cellar, Lily. Not to your father, not to anyone who comes to the door. Do you understand me? Your life—our lives—depend on you keeping your mouth shut."
From the kitchen, the sound of heavy jars being shifted on wooden shelves echoed loudly, followed by Mark’s low, frustrated muttering. A clatter of metal silverware falling to the linoleum floor made both children jump.
Toby leaned closer to his mother, ignoring her warning about the cellar. "He took the flashlight, Mom. The big one with the yellow handle. He didn't take any food out of the pantry. He’s looking for the keys again, isn't he?"
Elena’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. She grabbed Toby’s arm, her fingernails digging into his skin through the grey t-shirt. "Keys? What keys are you talking about, Toby? Did your father leave something in your room?"
"No," Toby whimpered, trying to pull away from her painful grip. "The ones he dropped down the heating vent last night when he was screaming at the wall."
Elena’s breath hitched. She slowly released her grip, her hands falling limply to her sides as the color drained completely from her face. The heating vent was located precisely beneath the dining table, right beneath the glass bowl of bread rolls.
Before Elena could speak, the kitchen door swung wide open. Mark stood there holding nothing, his blue button-down shirt slightly damp at the collar with sweat. His face was an emotionless mask, but his eyes were fixed on the floor between Elena and the children.

"You told them," Mark said softly, stepping back into the dining room. It wasn't a question; it was a death sentence.
