Chapter 11 - The Last Loaf

The creature devoured the dry bread roll in a single, violent motion, its jaw working frantically before turning its milky eyes back toward the hallway, where Toby and Lily stood trembling. The shattered glass crunched beneath its weight as it began to pull its emaciated frame forward once more, ignoring the remaining two rolls on the floor in favor of something much warmer.

Mark raised the heavy iron poker, his muscles taut under his torn blue shirt. "Elena, take the kids through the pantry window into the backyard. Don't look back, don't stop, and don't let go of their hands."

"I'm not leaving you here, Mark," Elena said fiercely, stepping out of the hallway into the light, her face streaked with tears and dirt. She held a heavy cast-iron skillet she must have grabbed from the kitchen stove. "We fight together or we die together."

"There is no fighting this, Elena!" Mark shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as the creature drew closer to the sideboard. "Look at the front door! The glass is cracking!"

At the end of the hallway, a loud crack echoed through the house as the frosted glass pane of the front door splintered inward under the weight of the silhouettes pressing against it. Cold, damp air flooded the hallway, bringing with it the unmistakable stench of turned earth and decay.

Agent Vance, paralyzed by fear just moments before, suddenly lurched toward the kitchen doorway. He grabbed the handle of the pantry door, throwing it open to reveal the dark shelves where Mark had been searching earlier.

"There's another way down," Vance gasped, pointing toward a small service ladder built into the back of the pantry wall, leading down into the foundations. "The original drainage pipe! It bypasses the vault entirely!"

Mark glanced from Vance to the creature now lunging across the Persian rug toward him. He swung the iron poker with all his might, catching the creature squarely across the shoulder. The impact produced a dull, hollow thud, like hitting a sack of dry stones, but the creature didn't even flinch. It grabbed the poker with terrifying strength, yoking it out of Mark’s hands and sending him crashing against the mahogany sideboard.

"Mark!" Elena screamed, rushing forward and bringing the heavy cast-iron skillet down onto the creature's head.

The blow sent a shockwave through the room, and the creature finally collapsed back onto the floor, twitching violently before going still.

"Move! Now!" Mark yelled, scrambling back to his feet as the front door gave way completely with a deafening crash of breaking glass and splintered wood.

The sound of multiple footsteps rushing down the front hallway signaled that the others had entered the house.

Elena grabbed Toby and Lily, pushing them ahead of her toward the kitchen pantry, while Vance held the kitchen door open with his back, his face twisted in terror as the shadows filled the hallway.
