Chapter 14: Arthur’s Testimony

The afternoon session began with heightened tension in the courtroom. Judge Harrison peered over his glasses as the prosecution called their final witness: Arthur Henderson.

A murmur rippled through the gallery as Arthur stood slowly from his seat at the plaintiff’s table. With the steady support of his walker and the bailiff guiding his path, Arthur made his way to the witness stand with remarkable dignity. He took his oath, his voice steady and clear as he swore to tell the truth.

“State your full name for the record, please,” the prosecutor requested gently.

“Arthur James Henderson,” he replied, the slight stutter of his stroke barely noticeable under the weight of his resolve.

“Mr. Henderson, please tell the court about your living situation over the past six months following your medical emergency.”

Arthur looked directly toward the jury box, his eyes sweeping across the jurors before resting briefly on Evelyn, who finally looked up to meet his gaze.

“I was recovering,” Arthur said clearly, his voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. “My mind was clear. I wanted to heal surrounded by my daughter and granddaughter. But my wife, Evelyn, wanted control. She cut off my visitors, intercepted my mail, and tried to strip away my legal autonomy while I was too weak to fight back.”

The prosecutor stepped closer. “And regarding the proxy documents and the estate transfer attempts?”

“They were forged,” Arthur stated firmly. “I never consented to any transfer. My daughter never signed those papers. Evelyn used deception and manipulated our granddaughter to execute a crime behind our backs.”

The defense attorney stood up to cross-examine, attempting to rattle Arthur by questioning his cognitive capacity following his stroke. But Arthur answered every question with sharp, precise clarity, shutting down any insinuation of mental incompetence.

When the cross-examination concluded, Judge Harrison dismissed Arthur, commending him for his testimony. As Arthur walked back to his seat with the help of the bailiff, Clara squeezed his arm, tears of pride welling in her eyes. The truth had finally been spoken into the open, stripping away every layer of deception that Evelyn had built over the years.
