Chapter 12: Preparing for the Subpoena

The official subpoena arrived on a crisp Tuesday morning, delivered by a solemn court bailiff who handed the thick manila envelope directly to Clara at her front door. The legal battle lines were officially drawn. The state vs. Evelyn Sterling was set to begin in the county superior court in less than three weeks.

Clara sat at the kitchen table, spreading out the court documents alongside the forensic reports, bank statements, and the forged blue clipboard document that had started it all. The physical evidence was overwhelming, yet the emotional weight of testifying against her own mother hung heavy over her daily life.

Arthur rolled his wheelchair into the kitchen, his morning physical therapy session having concluded successfully upstairs. He maneuvered the chair smoothly toward the table, his eyes scanning the paperwork.

“Are you okay, Dad?” Clara asked, immediately standing up to pour him a glass of fresh orange juice.

Arthur took the glass, sipping slowly before setting it down. He looked up at Clara with steady, unwavering eyes. “I... will testify,” he said clearly, the slurring in his speech noticeably diminished through consistent therapy.

Clara knelt beside his wheelchair, placing her hand over his. “You don’t have to do that, Dad. The forensic handwriting experts and the attorney's testimony are more than enough to secure a conviction without putting you through the stress of a courtroom.”

“I must,” Arthur insisted, his voice carrying the firm authority that Clara remembered from her childhood. “Evelyn... betrayed us both. She used Lily. I need the court to hear the truth from my own lips.”

Clara nodded slowly, recognizing that testifying was as much about Arthur’s emotional closure and recovery of dignity as it was about legal justice. “Alright, Dad. We’ll do it together.”

Later that afternoon, Sarah arrived with legal briefs provided by Clara’s defense attorney, preparing them for the mock testimony session scheduled for the weekend. The atmosphere in the house was focused, industrious, and resolute. Every member of the household understood that closing this painful chapter required absolute honesty, accountability, and courage.

Lily bounced into the room carrying a batch of freshly baked cookies she had helped Sarah make, offering one to Arthur first. The bright, innocent laughter of an eight-year-old pierced through the heavy legal tension, reminding everyone why the fight for justice was so vital.
