Chapter 11: Bringing Arthur Home

Five days after the disastrous birthday party, the discharge process at Maplewood Care Center was finally complete. Clara pulled her car up to the front entrance, accompanied by Sarah, who had insisted on helping settle Arthur into his new permanent home.
Arthur walked out through the automatic sliding doors with the steady support of a physical therapist and a lightweight metal walker. He looked thinner than he had before his stroke, but his posture was upright, and his eyes carried a fierce, determined spark. When he saw Clara waiting by the car, a wide, genuine smile broke across his lined face.
Clara rushed forward, gently taking over from the physical therapist to guide her father the final few steps. “Welcome home, Dad,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
Arthur reached out with a slightly trembling hand, gently patting Clara’s cheek. “Home,” he rasped out, his voice stronger than it had been in months. “Thank... you.”
The drive back to the suburban house was quiet and peaceful. Lily was waiting on the front porch, holding a homemade welcome sign written in colorful markers that read: WELCOME HOME GRANDPA!
When the car pulled into the driveway, Lily ran down the walkway, carefully stepping past the spot where the blue frosting had fallen days before. She threw her arms gently around Arthur’s neck as he sat in the passenger seat with the door open.
“I missed you, Grandpa!” Lily said happily.
Arthur kissed the top of her blonde pigtails, tears glistening in his eyes. “Missed you too, my little sunshine.”
Getting Arthur settled into the newly converted ground-floor guest room took teamwork between Clara, Sarah, and the home-health nurse who arrived shortly after them. The room was bright, overlooking the backyard garden where tulips were beginning to bloom in the spring soil.
As evening settled over the neighborhood, casting a warm orange glow across the living room, Clara sat on the sofa with a cup of tea while Arthur rested comfortably in his new room down the hall. Sarah sat beside her, flipping through a magazine.

“It feels like peace is finally returning to this house,” Sarah observed quietly.
“It does,” Clara agreed, resting her head against the back of the sofa. “The legal battle is just beginning, and the court dates will be difficult, but Dad is safe. That’s what matters.”
