Chapter 7 - The Digital Trap And The Countdown Begins

A series of violent, rhythmic electrical buzzing sounds erupted from the service bar, drawing the immediate attention of the SWAT officers away from Elena. The massive flat-screen monitors, which had previously broadcasted the federal arrest warrant for Julian Vance, abruptly cut to a solid, blinding crimson interface. Across every single screen, a bold white digital clock began ticking downward in stark, merciless increments: 02:59:59… 02:59:58…
The SWAT commander released his grip on Elena’s arm, stumbling back a half-step as he stared at the glowing displays with undisguised confusion and dread. He tapped his radio headset twice, shouting over the static.
“Command, this is Team Alpha. We have an unprogrammed system override at the primary downtown location. All local network nodes are locking down. Repeat, we are locked out of our own tactical feeds.”
From the floor nearby, the manager of the restaurant crawled frantically on his hands and knees, pointing a trembling finger toward the service bar where the glowing countdown was now casting long, distorted shadows across the broken glass.
“It’s a dead-man switch!” the manager screamed in absolute hysteria. “That lunatic programmed the entire building’s mainframe to wipe out local municipal records if he isn’t cleared within three hours! We’re all going to be implicated in his corporate treason!”
The four women in evening gowns—the woman in red, the woman in green, the woman in gold, and the woman in sparkly silver—began crying openly, their expensive makeup running down their cheeks as they realized their elite status and immense wealth could not shield them from a high-tech corporate hostage situation. They had attended the dinner expecting a night of casual networking and high-society gossip, only to find themselves trapped at ground zero of a clandestine war between a billionaire industrialist and the federal government.
Elena clutched the heavy brass key in her pocket, her mind racing. Julian hadn’t just given her an escape route; he had left her as the sole catalyst in a meticulously engineered counter-offensive. The countdown clock wasn’t a threat of destruction—it was a challenge. It was a calculated window of time designed to force the corrupt authorities to either negotiate on his terms or watch their carefully constructed lies disintegrate into public view.
“You!” the commander yelled, pivoting back toward Elena with renewed fury. “You know what this code means! What did he give you? What did he put in your hand before he vanished?”
Elena held her ground, lifting her chin despite the overwhelming terror threatening to swallow her whole. She knew that handing over the brass key to these corrupt officers would mean surrendering the only piece of evidence capable of proving Julian’s innocence and keeping her mother safe.
“He gave me nothing except a warning about people like you,” Elena replied, her voice surprisingly firm as it echoed through the silent, tension-filled room.
The commander’s face twisted in rage. He raised his radio to order her immediate detention, but before he could speak, the front entrance doors automatically slammed shut and locked with a heavy, impenetrable metallic thud.
