Chapter 12 - Arthur Sterling’s Press Conference And The Trap Closing

The hospital television screen flashed brightly, cutting away from a late-night talk show to display a live, high-definition broadcast from the steps of the downtown municipal courthouse. Arthur Sterling—the husband of the woman in the red gown who had screamed at Julian earlier that evening—stood behind a polished wooden podium flanked by armed federal marshals and serious-faced prosecutors. His expensive tailored suit was immaculate, but his eyes darted nervously across the sea of flashing camera strobes and reporters shouting aggressive questions.

“Citizens of this city, tonight marks the end of an era of unchecked corporate tyranny,” Arthur Sterling announced into the wall of microphones, his voice booming with rehearsed theatrical righteousness. “Julian Vance has fled justice, but his criminal network cannot hide behind encrypted servers forever. Federal authorities have secured several key associates, and we are issuing a final public warning to any accomplices still harboring classified documents or stolen corporate assets. Surrender them immediately, or face maximum conspiracy charges with zero tolerance.”

Elena stared at the screen, her blood running cold. Arthur Sterling wasn’t just a corrupt municipal board member; he was the primary architect of the energy fraud scheme detailed in the journal resting inside her open briefcase. He was standing on national television, projecting absolute confidence while desperately trying to preemptively discredit any evidence Julian might have left behind.

On the bed, her mother stirred, opening her eyes with a look of deep concern as she listened to Sterling’s booming voice echoing through the hospital room.

“Elena… that man on the television,” her mother whispered, her voice tight with anxiety. “He’s the one who threatened your manager last month about cutting restaurant safety budgets. He’s dangerous.”

“I know, Mom,” Elena replied quietly, her eyes locked on the screen. A cold, fierce resolve settled deep within her chest, replacing the terror that had paralyzed her earlier. She realized that running away was no longer an option. If she hid the flash drive, Arthur Sterling and his conspirators would continue destroying innocent lives, exploiting desperate workers, and crushing anyone who dared to stand in their way.

She turned away from the television, reaching into the black leather briefcase. Her fingers closed firmly around the small, metallic flash drive. It was cold to the touch, yet it felt heavier than a block of solid gold. It contained the power to topple empires, destroy corrupt politicians, and clear Julian Vance’s name once and for all.

Elena picked up her phone, pulling up the encrypted communications app Julian had used earlier. Without hesitation, she tapped the pre-saved contact labeled VANGUARD COMMAND, her thumb hovering over the call button.

Before she could press down to connect the call, the heavy oak door of room four-twelve suddenly unlocked with a sharp electronic chime, and two armed federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers stepped uninvited into the room, their eyes locked directly on Elena with predatory focus.

“Elena Rodriguez?” the lead federal agent asked, his voice flat and menacing as he rested his hand casually on the holster of his sidearm. “You’re coming with us. Federal custody. Now.”
