Chapter 3 - Shards Of Glass And Shadows At The Entrance

The deafening crash of shattering plate glass echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, scattering diamond-like shards across the imported marble floor. The four women in evening gowns screamed in unison, their designer heels slipping as they scrambled backward in a panicked rush. The woman in the red gown tripped over her heavy silk hem, landing hard against a decorative planter while the others abandoned her in their desperate bid for safety. Julian Vance did not flinch, nor did he break his intense stare toward the shattered front entryway. He simply shifted his weight, placing himself squarely between the terrified Elena and the swirling dust cloud ahead.

Through the broken storefront window, the harsh neon lights of the city street illuminated a chaotic scene. A sleek, matte-black armored SUV was idling half-parked on the sidewalk, its heavy doors flung wide open. Two men in tactical black gear stepped over the shattered glass with practiced, silent efficiency. They were holding specialized medical cases, their expressions completely neutral as they scanned the luxurious dining room for threats. Behind them, a third operative stayed near the vehicle, holding a secure satellite communicator to his ear while monitoring multiple digital feeds.

The restaurant manager stumbled backward, tripping over a velvet rope stanchion and landing flat on his back with a startled yelp. He stared at the tactical operatives with sheer horror, realizing in an instant that the well-dressed man on the leather sofa was someone far more dangerous and powerful than any ordinary billionaire dining out on a Friday night.

“Sir,” the lead tactical agent spoke in a crisp, controlled voice, his eyes fixed on Julian. “Vanguard unit deployed. Transport vehicle is secure and idling. County General has been notified, and our primary physician is already on-site in room four-twelve administering emergency stabilizing procedures.”

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as fresh tears—this time born of overwhelming shock and profound relief—spilled over her cheeks. She looked at Julian, her mind racing to comprehend the sheer scale of power and resources he had just deployed for a waitress he had met only minutes ago.

“You… you didn’t just call an ambulance,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the fabric of her black apron. “You mobilized a private medical team.”

Julian turned his head slightly, offering her a fleeting, gentle look that softened his otherwise severe features.

“Life is too short to rely on bureaucratic systems that fail the people who need them most,” Julian replied softly. He turned back to the lead operative. “Secure the perimeter. Ensure no media or corporate interference reaches that hospital room before my arrival.”

“Understood, sir,” the operative replied with a crisp nod.

From the floor nearby, the woman in the red gown struggled to her feet, brushing dirt and glass fragments off her ruined silk dress. Her face was twisted in a mixture of fear and outraged indignation. She marched toward Julian, her eyes flashing with anger as she ignored the broken glass crunching beneath her expensive heels.

“Do you have any idea who we are?” the woman in red shrieked, pointing an accusing finger at Julian. “You’ve ruined our charity gala dinner, destroyed private property, and brought armed thugs into a five-star establishment! We demand an immediate explanation, or my husband will ensure you never walk free in this city again!”

Julian slowly turned his head to look at her. His eyes were completely devoid of emotion, like chips of black obsidian.

Before Julian could utter a single word in response, his smartphone buzzed violently in his hand, displaying an encrypted alert code that made his blood run cold.
