Chapter 4: The Story in the Silver Box

By midnight, Claire’s fever had broken. Her breathing was steady under the gentle hiss of the nasal cannula. The boys had fallen asleep on the plush velvet sofa in the private waiting suite, wrapped in cashmere blankets.
Julien sat in a leather armchair beside Claire’s bed, waiting in the quiet room. When she opened her eyes this time, they were clear.
"Arthur talked about you every single night," Claire whispered, her voice fragile but steady.
Julien leaned forward, his chest tightening. "Why didn't he come back for me? Why leave me in an orphanage while he disappeared into the streets?"
Claire closed her eyes briefly, a tear trailing into her graying hair. "He didn't abandon you, Julien. He was ruined. A corrupt partner in his watchmaking workshop framed him for arson and embezzlement. Arthur was sent to prison, and by the time he fought his way out five years later, the state had erased your records and hidden you in closed adoption files."
Julien’s jaw clenched so tight the muscles ached. "He searched for me?"
"Until his final breath," Claire said softly. "I was a young nurse volunteering at the hospice during his last winter. He had no money, no home. But he carved that tin car by hand in the hospice ward. He gave it to me and made me promise: if I ever crossed paths with a man carrying the name Julien Vance, I had to give it to him. Along with a safety deposit key."

She pointed weakly toward her worn handbag resting on the bedside table. "Inside the lining. A small silver key to the vaults at Banque Nationale de Paris."
