Chapter 5 - The Chicago Secret

The mention of Chicago struck Julian like a physical blow to the chest. He staggered backward from the cell bars, his knees buckling slightly as he hit the edge of the metal bunk. All the breath rushed out of his lungs, leaving him gasping in the stale, recycled air of the holding cell. He had buried that life so deep, constructing an impenetrable wall of lies, aliases, and encrypted communications. He thought he was untouchable out in the Midwest, visiting his second wife and toddler son only during quarterly business trips.

Marcus stood outside the cell, watching Julian’s complete psychological collapse with a look of cold clinical interest. He slowly opened the manila folder and slid a single glossy photograph through the narrow gap in the iron bars. It fluttered down lazily before landing face-up on the dusty concrete floor.

Julian didn't want to look, but his eyes were drawn downward against his will. The photograph showed a modest suburban home on a quiet tree-lined street in Evanston, Illinois. Standing on the front porch was a tired-looking woman with kind eyes, holding a toddler who had Julian’s exact facial structure. It was Sarah—the woman he had married three years before he even met Elena, the family he had abandoned financially and emotionally while pretending to be a bachelor billionaire in Manhattan.

“How... how did you find them?” Julian choked out, his voice cracking as hot tears of panic finally pricked the corners of his eyes. He realized instantly that his arrest for embezzlement was only the opening salvo. Beatrice and Elena hadn't just destroyed his career; they had systematically dismantled his entire existence, leaving no stone unturned and no lie unpunished.

Marcus adjusted his glasses again, his expression unchanging. “Beatrice doesn't leave loose ends, Julian. When you play high-stakes poker with royalty, you don't get to keep a spare hand hidden under the table. Within forty-eight hours of your little stunt at the anniversary party, our investigators had traced every wire transfer, every flight manifest, and every secret motel receipt straight to Sarah's front door.”

Julian lunged forward again, gripping the bars so hard his fingers ached. “Leave them out of this! Sarah has nothing to do with my business, and my son doesn’t even know who I am! They’re innocent!”

“Innocent?” Marcus scoffed softly, shaking his head. “Nobody is innocent when they’re funded by stolen corporate capital, Julian. The authorities are already freezing Sarah’s bank accounts. By morning, she’ll be evicted from that house, and she’ll find out that her loving husband is actually a bigamous fraud facing federal prison.”

The room seemed to spin around Julian. The walls felt like they were closing in, crushing the remaining air from his lungs. He fell to his knees on the concrete floor, his hands still clutching the cold iron bars as the devastating weight of his actions crashed down upon him. He hadn't just ruined his own life; he had destroyed the only two women who had ever genuinely cared about him, all for the sake of his bottomless vanity and greed.

“Please,” Julian whispered, his voice breaking completely as he looked up at Marcus with desperate, tear-filled eyes. “Tell Elena... tell her I’ll sign whatever she wants. I’ll give up every cent, I’ll plead guilty to every charge, I’ll disappear off the face of the earth. Just... please help Sarah and the boy. They didn't ask for any of this.”

Marcus looked down at him with an expression of profound pity that felt infinitely worse than hatred. He slowly turned his back and began walking down the concrete corridor toward the exit, his footsteps echoing rhythmically against the stone walls.

“It’s too late for deals, Julian,” Marcus’s voice echoed back from the shadows. “Elena is already on a private jet to Chicago.”
