Chapter 12 - The Lockdown Strategy

The mahogany-paneled library of the estate smelled faintly of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and beeswax. A massive oak conference table dominated the center of the room, currently littered with forensic accounting binders, digital hard drives, and legal briefs bearing the seal of the federal district court.

Elena sat at the head of the table, her posture rigid and commanding. To her right sat Sarah, still clutching a cup of black coffee as she tried to absorb the complex web of financial transactions laid out before her. Across the table, Marcus and a team of three senior federal prosecutors leaned over a series of highlighted ledger sheets, speaking in low, clipped tones.

“The indictment is airtight,” lead prosecutor Vance—no relation to Julian—stated firmly, tapping his pen against a thick stack of documents. “We have traced the shell company transfers from the corporate holding accounts straight to the luxury penthouse in Manhattan and the secondary mortgage payments in Illinois. Julian Vance acted with premeditation and deliberate intent to defraud.”

Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, looking directly at Elena. “The defense attorney will likely try to paint Julian as a rogue employee acting under pressure from executive management, attempting to shift the blame onto the board of directors. But our digital footprint analysis confirms every transfer authorization bears his biometric signature and encrypted digital key.”

Elena nodded slowly, her dark eyes narrowing with calculated focus. “He won’t be able to pin this on the board. Every paper trail leads directly to his personal accounts and his offshore holdings. But I don’t just want a conviction, Marcus. I want a complete asset forfeiture of every single dime he tried to hide away.”

Sarah looked up from her coffee cup, her voice hesitant but resolute. “What happens to me and Leo in all of this? The federal agents said my house in Illinois is under asset seizure review.”

Elena turned her gaze to Sarah, her expression softening into genuine reassurance. “Your house in Illinois will be legally detached from the federal forfeiture proceedings by end of day, Sarah. Our legal team has filed an amended petition proving you had no knowledge of his financial operations. Furthermore, any personal funds you earned independently will be fully protected.”

Before Sarah could express her overwhelming relief, the heavy oak library doors swung open without warning. Beatrice stepped into the room, her slate-gray Chanel suit immaculate, her face carrying an expression of cool, calculated urgency.

“We have a development,” Beatrice announced, walking smoothly toward the head of the table and dropping a single sheet of printed email correspondence directly in front of Elena.

Elena picked up the paper, her eyes scanning the text rapidly. As she read, the color in her cheeks tightened, and a dangerous, glacial calm settled over her features.

“What is it?” Marcus asked, leaning forward.

“Julian hasn’t given up,” Elena whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling register that made the temperature in the room seem to plummet. “He’s trying to sell classified corporate acquisition strategies to our primary international competitor from inside his holding cell.”
