Chapter 3 - The Socialite's Panic

Beatrice Sterling’s chest rose and fell in jagged, shallow breaths, the heavy scent of her expensive French perfume suddenly smelling sickly sweet in the charged air of the lobby. The diamond pendant resting against her collarbone rose and fell with her accelerating panic as she realized that the twenty-year social hierarchy she had ruled with an iron fist had just been dismantled in the time it took to brew an espresso.

"You... you must be mistaken," Beatrice stammered, her voice losing its aristocratic resonance and dropping into a brittle, high-pitched screech. "Arthur Vance has three sons! Everyone knows that! The Vance family empire is run by Alexander, Richard, and Julian! There is no... there is no daughter! You’re just a clever scam artist who hacked the corporate feeds or staged some kind of digital deepfake to scare Donald!"

Clara gently shifted baby Leo to her other shoulder, her movements deliberate and unhurried. The infant let out a soft sigh in his sleep, completely oblivious to the financial earthquake his grandfather had just triggered on Wall Street.

"My father had three sons from his first marriage, Mrs. Sterling," Clara said, stepping closer until the older woman was forced to tilt her head back to maintain eye contact. "I am the daughter of his second marriage. Born twenty years ago to the woman he loved after he had already conquered the world. I don't appear on the public vanity lists because my father prefers to keep his real family shielded from parasites like you."

"Parasites?" Beatrice flushed a violent shade of crimson, the insult stinging her pride more deeply than the financial threat. "How dare you! My husband, Harold Sterling, dines with senators! He sits on the municipal zoning board! Your little father might own a hotel, but Harold can shut down every single construction permit you have in this entire state before the sun sets today!"

As if summoned by her desperate invocation, Beatrice’s smartphone began to ring with a harsh, repetitive digital chime that echoed off the crystal chandeliers. She pulled it from her pink Chanel bag with trembling fingers, her eyes lighting up with a desperate spark of vindication as she saw her husband’s caller ID.

"See?" Beatrice hissed triumphantly, flashing the screen at Clara as if it were a shield against damnation. "Harold is calling now. He’s probably already mobilized the city council. You’re going to be thrown out of not just this hotel, but this entire city, you ungrateful little—"

"Answer it, Beatrice," Clara interrupted softly. "Put it on speaker. Let's hear what Harold has to say about his zoning permits now."

With shaking fingers, Beatrice swiped the answer icon and tapped the speaker button, holding the phone aloft like a weapon. "Harold! Thank God! Listen to me, some absolute lunatic tramp in this lobby claims she bought the Grand Meridian through her father, Arthur Vance, and—"

"Shut up, Beatrice! Just shut your goddamn mouth!" Harold Sterling’s voice roared through the speaker, sounding not like a powerful titan of industry, but like a man who had just been thrown out of a second-story window without a parachute.

The silence that followed was so thick that the hum of the HVAC system sounded like a jet engine.

"Harold?" Beatrice whispered, her confidence instantly evaporating into cold terror. "What... what are you talking about? Why are you yelling at me? Call the mayor! Call the police commissioner! Have this girl—"

"The mayor's office isn't returning my calls, Beatrice!" Harold screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "The municipal zoning board just revoked every single commercial development permit we hold, effective immediately! All of them! Our bank lines of credit have been frozen by Vance Global Bank! They just called our corporate debt due—all four hundred million dollars of it—payable within twenty-four hours!"

Beatrice staggered backward, her stiletto heel catching on the edge of a brass floor inlay, sending her sprawling awkwardly against a marble pillar. The pink Chanel dress twisted around her knees, tearing slightly at the hem.

"Payable... payable in twenty-four hours?" Beatrice repeated, her eyes wide and uncomprehending. "We... we don't have four hundred million in liquid cash, Harold! Most of our capital is tied up in the Westside tower development!"

"Then we're bankrupt, you stupid, arrogant cow!" Harold bellowed, the sound of tearing paper and frantic sobbing echoing through the line before he slammed the phone down with a deafening crash.

The lobby was dead silent. Every single guest, concierge, and bellhop stood frozen in place, watching the fallen queen of high society pick herself up off the marble floor with dirt smudged across her expensive pink silk.

Clara looked down at Beatrice, her expression entirely devoid of pity. "My father doesn't just buy hotels, Mrs. Sterling. When someone insults my son, my father buys the ground they walk on, the bank that holds their mortgage, and the air they breathe."

Beatrice looked up from the floor, her makeup ruined by sudden, uncontrolled tears, her aristocratic veneer completely shattered. She opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, a pair of sharp, clicking footsteps echoed across the entrance as a second black-suited entourage pushed through the revolving doors, led by a silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit who looked at Beatrice as if she were a particularly repulsive insect.
