Chapter 7 - The Federal Subpoena and the Trap

The crisp rustle of heavy cardstock broke the tense silence of the conference room as the lead Department of Justice inspector stepped past the security guards and unfolded a federal document stamped with the crimson Great Seal of the United States. The fluorescent overhead lights glinted off the polished metal badges pinned sharply to the inspectors' dark blazers.
Victor Sterling’s arrogant smirk instantly vanished, his jaw tightening as his eyes darted from his father’s unflinching gaze to the federal agents standing blocking the only exit. The briefcase in his hand suddenly felt heavy, like a block of lead.
"Victor Sterling," the lead inspector announced, his voice echoing coldly across the wood-paneled walls. "You are hereby served with a federal grand jury subpoena and a freezing order on all domestic and international assets tied to Vanguard Capital Holdings."
Victor slammed the briefcase down onto the mahogany table with a resounding crash that rattled the crystal water pitchers. He whipped his head around to glare at his father, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. "This is a setup! You orchestrated this! You used your political influence to fabricate an investigation the moment you walked through those doors!"
Arthur Sterling did not raise his voice. He simply adjusted the red silk tie at his neck, his weathered face completely devoid of emotion. "Influence, Victor? No. I merely left a very clear paper trail for the authorities to follow. When you spent the last six months routing illicit capital through offshore accounts to buy up my hotel's debt, you forgot to check who owns the compliance software your shell companies were utilizing."
Marcus Vance swallowed hard, peering over his glasses at the federal documents as the pieces of the puzzle clicked violently into place in his mind. "The compliance software... SterlingTech Security. It's a wholly-owned subsidiary of the parent holding company."
"Precisely," Arthur murmured, turning his gaze back to his trembling, cornered son. "Every transaction Victor initiated, every encrypted wire transfer, and every illegally acquired bond was automatically mirrored to the federal financial crimes task force in real-time. He didn't just buy my debt, Marcus. He walked straight into a gilded cage I built specifically for him three years ago when he first started plotting against the family."
Victor’s chest heaved with ragged breaths, his manicured fingers curling into tight fists at his sides. All the carefully constructed confidence of a ruthless financial titan evaporated, leaving behind the desperate, cornered animal he truly was. "You tricked me. You faked your disappearance, you let Julian run wild, you pretended to be a destitute old man—all just to draw me out of hiding!"
"I didn't have to trick you, Victor," Arthur replied, stepping closer until his weathered shadow fell completely over his son. "Your own greed did the work for me. You were so blinded by your hatred and your desire to seize the throne that you never stopped to ask why I stepped away from the boardroom in the first place."
The federal agents moved in swiftly, their heavy footsteps closing the distance across the Persian rug. Victor thrashed backward, knocking his chair over onto the floor as the cold steel cuffs snapped onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click that reverberated through the silent room like a death knell.
"You can't do this to me!" Victor screamed, struggling against the iron grip of the agents as they hauled him toward the double doors. "I am a Sterling! This empire was built on blood, and I will tear it down to the studs before I let you win!"

Arthur watched his eldest son being dragged away into the dark hallway, his expression remaining a mask of profound, sorrowful resolve. As the heavy doors shut, locking the echoes of defeat outside, the old patriarch turned his attention back to the desk, where a single, untouched phone began to ring.
