Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes

The rhythmic ticking of the countdown timer on the penthouse monitor echoed loudly through the ruined room as the numbers flashed down: 04:59... 04:58...

Richard Thorne spun around instantly, his confident composure shattering as he stared at the pitch-black smart-glass windows. He slammed his palm against the reinforced glass panel near the private elevator, but it didn't even budge. He whipped back around to face Arthur Sterling, his face twisting into a mask of frantic panic.

"What did you do?" Richard yelled, his voice rising in pitch as he grabbed the emergency terminal keyboard. "Why are the security bulkheads locking down? The master override is routed directly through my encrypted drive!"

Arthur Sterling did not move an inch. He stood tall and unyielding, leaning slightly on his wooden cane, his weathered face bathed in the red glow of the countdown timer. He didn't raise his voice, yet every word carried the crushing weight of absolute authority.

"You assumed that because I gave you access to the penthouse mainframe, I hadn't already isolated the primary node," Arthur said smoothly, a cold, calculating edge sharpening his tone. "You spent months downloading mirrored copies of our subsidiary accounts, Richard. But you didn't realize that every file you accessed was a localized honeypot designed to track your exact keystrokes and broadcast your location directly to the federal cyber-crimes division."

Elena Vance’s face drained of every last trace of color. She frantically whipped out her gold-trimmed tablet, tapping the screen with trembling fingers as error codes flashed across the display in angry crimson letters. "It's a trap! The mainframe isn't executing a liquidation protocol... it's uploading a global subpoena lockdown directly to the SEC and the Interpol financial crimes task force!"

The tactical operatives near the doorway raised their weapons in confusion, looking at Richard and Elena for instructions, but before anyone could make a move, the heavy steel security doors leading to the emergency stairwell blew outward with a deafening crash.

Thick clouds of white smoke billowed into the room as a dozen armed federal agents, flanked by state police and federal marshals, swarmed across the ruined Persian rugs with practiced precision. Before the tactical guards hired by Richard could even raise their firearms, they were disarmed, pinned to the floor, and placed in heavy steel handcuffs within a matter of seconds.

"Richard Thorne! Elena Vance!" shouted the lead federal marshal, stepping forward with his badge gleaming brightly beneath the emergency lights. "You are under federal arrest for corporate espionage, international wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit financial terrorism. Put your hands behind your back immediately!"

Richard stared in absolute horror as two officers lunged forward, grabbing him by the shoulders and slamming him violently against the edge of the ruined mahogany desk. The sleek encrypted data drive slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering uselessly against the broken glass on the floor.

"No! You can't touch me! I am the chief legal counsel of this corporation!" Richard screamed, thrashing wildly as the cold steel cuffs snapped tightly around his wrists. "Arthur! You can't do this! The board will never survive a public scandal of this magnitude!"

Arthur watched coldly as the man who had tried to steal his life's work was hauled away in chains. He didn't gloat, nor did he smile. He simply watched with the weary, profound detachment of a man who had finally excised the last cancerous tumor from his family legacy.

Elena Vance dropped her tablet to the floor, her knees buckling beneath her as she realized the utter totality of their defeat. She looked up at her brother, Marcus, who stood just a few paces away, his expression a heartbreaking mix of betrayal and profound sorrow.

"Marcus... please," Elena whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes as the federal agents hauled her to her feet. "I... I just wanted us to be free of him."

Marcus turned his head away, refusing to meet her eyes, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. "You weren't fighting for freedom, Elena. You were just as blind as Julian and Victor."

As the last of the federal agents escorted the prisoners toward the elevator, the countdown timer on the terminal screen finally hit zero—not with a destructive crash, but with a quiet, triumphant chime, displaying a single, glowing green message: System Secured. Sterling Global Holdings Restored.
