Chapter 2 - The Emergency Boardroom Lockdown

Julian stared at the flashing screen of his phone as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike. The caller ID read Emergency Boardroom, a private line reserved exclusively for hostile takeovers and catastrophic financial crises. The harsh electronic ringing echoed relentlessly through the vast, silent lobby of the Zenith Hotel, cutting sharply into the heavy tension hanging in the air. Around him, high-end concierges, bellhops, and terrified front-desk clerks stood frozen in place, too afraid to even breathe, let alone offer a hand to help their former boss up from the puddle of melted ice and spilled champagne.

"Answer it, Julian," Arthur Sterling said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he adjusted the cuffs of his immaculate white shirt. He stood tall and unyielding, his weathered face completely devoid of pity, a stark contrast to the gentle way his hand still rested reassuringly on little Lily’s shoulder. "Let your dear friends on the board tell you what happens to men who forget where their bread is buttered."

With trembling fingers, Julian swiped the screen and pressed the phone to his ear, his voice cracking uncontrollably. "He... hello? This is Julian Sterling. I'm currently dealing with a severe security breach in the main lobby—"

"Shut your mouth, Julian, and listen to me very carefully," barked the furious voice of Marcus Vance, the senior managing partner of Sterling Global Holdings and Julian’s primary ally on the executive board. Marcus sounded completely unhinged, breathing heavily as though he had just sprinted up ten flights of stairs. "Are you out of your absolute mind? What kind of cosmic-level stupidity possessed you to assault our primary shareholder?"

Julian scrambled to his knees, ignoring the sharp sting of broken glass biting into his palms. His eyes darted frantically between his uncle’s cold, unblinking stare and the towering security guards blocking every exit. "Primary shareholder? Marcus, what are you talking about? It was just some old beggar trying to steal food from the VIP lounge! I was protecting the hotel's brand equity!"

"Beggar?" Marcus let out a hysterical, breathless laugh on the other end of the line. "You absolute fool! That 'beggar' is Arthur Sterling himself! He didn't lose his fortune in the market crash last year; he liquidated his secondary assets into physical cash and went undercover across three continents to test the integrity of his own executives! And you—you threw him out, insulted a three-year-old child, and smashed half the lobby while doing it!"

The world seemed to spin violently around Julian. The expensive Italian marble floor tilted beneath him, and a cold sweat broke out across his forehead. All the ambitious schemes, the embezzlement schemes he thought he had successfully hidden, the fraudulent land acquisitions he had pushed through while his uncle was away—it all rushed back to haunt him in a single, suffocating second. He had spent the last three years treating the Sterling empire as his personal piggy bank, assuming the old man would never return to check the books.

"Marcus, you have to help me," Julian whispered desperately, his voice dropping to a pathetic whine as tears of pure terror pricked the corners of his eyes. "Call the board off. Vote against any emergency motions. We can fix this quietly. I'll transfer whatever funds—"

"It's too late, Julian," Marcus interrupted, his tone instantly shifting from frantic panic to cold, bureaucratic finality. "The emergency board meeting concluded three minutes ago. Unanimous vote. Twelve to zero. You have been stripped of all executive powers, your corporate credit cards have been deactivated, and federal investigators have already been notified regarding your offshore accounts in the Caymans. As of right now, you don't even own the clothes on your back."

The phone line clicked dead, the monotonous dial tone buzzing in Julian's ear like an angry hornet. The Zenith Hotel wasn't just his workplace anymore; it was a fortress that had suddenly transformed into a concrete prison cell designed specifically to crush him. He let the phone slip from his numb fingers, watching it clatter helplessly against the marble floor.

Arthur slowly stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone, stopping just inches from Julian’s face. He looked down at his ruined nephew with an expression of profound disappointment that stung far worse than any physical blow could have.

"You always did have an expensive taste for destruction, Julian," Arthur said quietly, leaning down slightly so only his nephew could hear. "You thought the throne was yours just because I stepped away to mourn. But you forgot one fundamental rule of the Sterling family."

Julian looked up, his lips trembling as he braced himself for the final verdict. "What... what rule?"

May you like

Arthur’s eyes flashed with a sudden, razor-sharp intensity that sent a chill straight down Julian’s spine. "We always audit our own garbage before we take it out."
