Chapter 7: The Chase in the Conduit

“Move!” David hissed, breaking into a rapid, low jog while keeping the flashlight beam steady on the path ahead.

Sarah pushed past her exhaustion, her muscles screaming as she carried Lily through the damp, narrow corridor. The sound of pursuit grew louder behind them, bouncing off the curved concrete walls and distorting into an unnatural roar. Harsh white beams of high-powered tactical flashlights suddenly cut through the gloom far down the tunnel, painting frantic dancing shadows across the infrastructure pipes.

“Hey! Stop right there!” a rough voice bellowed from the darkness behind them, the sound amplified by the acoustic tunnel.

They didn't stop. Sarah felt adrenaline flood her system, overriding the fatigue in her limbs. She focused entirely on the rhythmic breathing of her sleeping daughter and the faint, glowing exit sign she could finally see suspended at the far end of the tunnel junction.

David reached the access ladder first, frantically spinning the security wheel that unlatched the heavy hatch leading up to the subway maintenance level. The metal wheel was rusted and stubborn, screeching loudly in the enclosed space.

“Hurry, David!” Evelyn urged, glancing back down the straight stretch of the conduit. Two dark figures in tactical gear were sprinting toward them, closing the distance rapidly, their flashlights blindingly bright.

With a final, desperate heave, David wrenched the wheel free and pushed the heavy iron hatch upward. Cool, fresh air rushed down from the street level above, carrying the distant, reassuring rumble of late-night subway trains.

“Evelyn, go!” David commanded, boosting the older woman up through the opening. Evelyn grabbed the rungs of the ladder and scrambled upward with surprising speed, driven by pure survival instinct.

Sarah handed the sleeping Lily up through the hatch into Evelyn’s waiting arms. “Hold her tight, Evelyn. Don't let go.”

“I’ve got her,” Evelyn called down, her voice tight with panic as the heavy footsteps of their pursuers echoed only fifty yards away.

Sarah grabbed the cold metal rungs and hoisted herself up just as a sharp voice barked from the tunnel floor below. “Target sighted! Federal obstruction order! Halt or we use non-lethal force!”

A rubber-bullet round ricocheted off the concrete wall inches from Sarah’s foot, whining loudly into the darkness. David slammed his weight upward against the iron hatch, pulling himself onto the platform just as Sarah reached the top. Together, Sarah and David slammed the heavy steel door shut and threw the manual deadbolts into place, locking the pursuers out in the subterranean maze.
