Chapter 10: Dawn of a New Audit

The morning sun cast a golden, unblemished light across the manicured lawn of Sarah’s suburban home. The crisp autumn air carried the scent of fallen leaves and fresh coffee. Inside the sunlit kitchen, Sarah stood comfortably in a soft cream-colored sweater and casual denim trousers, far removed from the dark blue lace dress and heavy pearls of the previous evening.
The kitchen radio hummed softly in the background, broadcasting the morning financial news report. The lead story echoed clearly across the quiet room: ‘Federal authorities executed simultaneous raids on the headquarters of Vanguard Development late last night, arresting CEO Director Vance and three senior executives following a massive whistleblower disclosure involving multi-million-dollar corporate embezzlement...’
Sarah turned off the radio with a quiet click, pouring a fresh cup of coffee into her favorite ceramic mug. At the kitchen table, Lily was happily coloring with a new set of pastel crayons, her sketchpad filled with bright, cheerful drawings of flowers and sunshine. There were no shadows here, no hushed phone calls, and no looming threats.
A gentle knock at the front door broke the morning peace. Sarah walked down the hallway and pulled the door open to find David standing on the porch. He was dressed casually in a navy blazer and open-collared shirt, holding a large white bakery box tied with a red ribbon.
“Morning, Sarah,” David greeted with a warm, relaxed smile that reached his eyes. “Hope I'm not interrupting, but Evelyn and I thought we’d stop by before heading downtown to officially sign our depositions with the federal prosecutor.”
Sarah smiled, stepping aside to let him in. “Not at all. Come on in. Evelyn is already in the kitchen helping herself to coffee.”
True to word, Evelyn emerged from the kitchen holding a mug, wearing a simple beige blouse and dark trousers. The sharp, guarded edge that had defined her personality at the restaurant was completely gone, replaced by a softer, genuine composure.
“I still can't believe we pulled it off,” Evelyn said, shaking her head with a light chuckle as she set her coffee down on the entryway console. “My phone hasn't stopped buzzing since six AM. Every major financial outlet in the city wants a statement.”

“Let the prosecutors handle the statements,” Sarah replied, leading them toward the sunlit kitchen where the smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls filled the air. “Our job as auditors is officially finished. We found the discrepancies, we balanced the ledger, and the account is finally closed.”
David set the bakery box on the kitchen island and opened it, revealing an assortment of warm pastries. He looked around the peaceful home, taking a deep breath of the quiet morning air. “It’s strange, isn't it? After spending years living in fear of what was hidden in the footnotes, the silence actually feels... quiet.”
