Back in the sunlit tranquility of Sarah’s suburban kitchen, the morning light continued to climb higher, casting warm patterns across the hardwood floor. Lily finished her drawing, proudly holding up the sketchpad for Sarah, David, and Evelyn to admire.
“Look! I drew all of us having a picnic in the park,” Lily announced happily, her blue eyes shining with excitement.
Sarah knelt beside her daughter, gazing at the crayon drawing with genuine admiration. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart. Just beautiful.”
Evelyn smiled softly, resting a hand on Sarah’s shoulder—a gesture entirely devoid of the tension that had once marked their relationship. “You know, Sarah, the federal prosecutor mentioned that the department is setting up an independent oversight committee for municipal development audits. They asked if I knew anyone qualified to lead the forensic division.”
Sarah looked up, raising an eyebrow with mild amusement. “And what did you tell them?”
“I told them I knew exactly the right person,” Evelyn replied with a knowing grin. “Though she might be a bit too busy enjoying her retirement and coloring with her daughter to take the job right away.”
David laughed, pouring himself another cup of coffee from the pot. “Frankly, I think Sarah has earned every single minute of peace she can get. Besides, I've always wanted to try my hand at consulting independently. No corporate boards, no hidden vaults, just honest numbers for honest people.”

Sarah stood up, feeling a profound sense of lightness that she hadn't experienced in years. The heavy handbag she had gripped so fiercely at the restaurant table was resting quietly on the counter, empty of emergency drives and legal affidavits. The audit was over. The balance sheet of her life was squared away, clear and transparent down to the final decimal point.
“Well,” Sarah said, turning toward the kitchen window to watch the leaves dancing in the gentle autumn breeze outside. “If you ever need someone to double-check your math, David, you know where to find me.”
