Chapter 13 - Through the Canopy

The snow crunched softly beneath their boots as they sprinted through the dense, snow-laden pine forest. Every breath tore at Michael’s lungs like ice shards, the freezing mountain air burning his throat with every inhalation. In his arms, Lily felt impossibly heavy, her small body shivering violently despite the thick wool blanket Elena had wrapped around her before they left the barn.
Above them, the high-pitched whir of the thermal drone cut through the howling winter wind. A faint crimson beam swept across the white snowpack just ten yards to their left, illuminating the dark trunks of the fir trees with an unearthly glow.
"Get down!" David hissed, diving behind a massive, moss-covered boulder.
Michael dropped to his knees, pulling Elena down beside him into the shadow of a fallen oak log. They held their breath, pressing themselves flat against the freezing ground as the drone hovered directly overhead, its lenses clicking and whirring as it scanned the sector.
The red beam washed over the top of the log, missing Michael’s shoulder by mere inches. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end. For five agonizing seconds, the world stopped turning.
Then, the high-pitched hum shifted pitch, the machine drifting away toward the logging bridge in the distance, chasing the false trail Elena had broadcasted over the sat-com.
"Move!" David whispered urgently, scrambling back to his feet. "That bought us two minutes, tops. When they realize the bridge is empty, they'll recalibrate the thermal grids to scan this entire ridge."
They broke cover again, pushing through the deep snowdrifts with desperate strides. The dark outline of the federal highway guardrail finally loomed through the thick curtain of falling snow ahead of them, marking the boundary of the estate and their only ticket to safety.
As they burst through the final line of trees and scrambled up the snowy embankment toward the roadside, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights slammed into them from the darkness.
A black tactical transport van skidded to a halt on the icy asphalt right beside the guardrail, its side doors sliding open with a metallic crash. Three armed operatives stepped out into the glare, their assault rifles raised and locked squarely on David and Michael.
"End of the line, gentlemen," a cold, amplified voice boomed from the van's PA system. "Drop the weapon and step away from the child."
David raised the assault rifle, preparing to fire, but before he could pull the trigger, a sharp, metallic click echoed from directly behind them on the dark shoulder of the highway.
"Drop your weapon, David," a calm, chillingly familiar voice commanded from the shadows of the snowbank.

Michael slowly turned his head, his breath catching in his throat as Eleanor stepped out from behind the guardrail, her grey sweater dusted with fresh snow, holding a loaded hunting rifle steady and pointing it directly at her own son's chest.
