Chapter 10 - Darkness Beneath the Floor

The heavy steel hatch slammed shut with a deafening clang, cutting off the deafening roar of gunfire and plunging the underground tunnel into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Michael clutched Lily tighter to his chest, feeling the frantic, hummingbird beat of his daughter's heart against his ribs. "Are you okay, baby?" he whispered into her hair, his voice trembling as he tried to steady his breathing.

"I'm scared, Daddy," Lily whimpered, her small arms wrapping around his neck so hard it hurt. "Where's Grandma?"

Before Michael could answer, a dull, metallic scratching sound echoed from above. Someone was pounding on the exterior of the steel hatch with the butt of an assault rifle.

"They're on the storm doors," Elena panted, her voice echoing in the damp, confined space. She fumbled blindly in the dark until her hand brushed against Michael’s arm. "There’s a secondary tunnel. It leads to the old root cellar beneath the barn. Move!"

A sharp beam of light cut through the gloom as David clicked on a heavy-duty tactical flashlight, illuminating the narrow, brick-lined tunnel that stretched out before them. The air down here smelled of wet earth, rotting wood, and decades of forgotten dust.

"Mother didn't make it," David said grimly, his face illuminated in the harsh white glow of the flashlight. He checked the slide of his Glock, his expression carved from stone. "When I fired through the door, the second operative grabbed her and pulled her out through the front. They've got her."

Elena stopped dead in her tracks, turning to face David with a look of sheer horror. "They have Eleanor? God help us. She knows where every single numbered account in the Caymans is registered. If they break her, the whole conspiracy goes public—and they'll execute every last one of us to bury it."

"She built this empire on blood and wire fraud, Elena," David snapped, grabbing her arm and pushing her forward down the tunnel. "Right now, her mouth is our biggest threat and our only shield. Move!"

Michael followed closely behind them, carrying Lily through the cramped underground passageway. The walls seemed to close in around them, dripping with condensation and cold sweat. Every breath felt heavy, contaminated by the claustrophobia of their desperate flight.

After what felt like hours of crawling and stumbling through the damp dark, a faint sliver of pale moonlight filtered down through a rusted iron grate set into the ceiling above them.

"The root cellar," Elena breathed, pointing upward. "The latch is just above that wooden crate."

David hoisted himself up onto a rotting apple crate, his fingers gripping the iron grate. He pushed upward with all his might, groaning as the rusted hinges gave way with a sharp screech, letting in a rush of freezing night air.

As David pulled himself up into the snowy barn, a pair of heavy combat boots dropped down from the rafters directly in front of him, blocking his escape.
