Chapter 1 - The Weight of Embers

The living room smelled of scorched leather and singed pages. Elena stood by the roaring hearth, her dark brown dress catching the amber glow of the flames. Her chest heaved with every breath, though she tried desperately to master the tremor in her hands.
Beside her, seven-year-old Lily was curled into a tight ball on the worn Persian rug, her light pink dress stained with soot and her throat raw from screaming. The child's terror was not a tantrum; it was the visceral panic of someone watching her entire world dissolve into smoke.
Michael yanked the heavy iron tongs backward, his grey button-down shirt torn at the cuff as he successfully rescued the smoldering photo album from the tongue of the fire.
"Have you completely lost your mind, Elena?" Michael shouted, his voice cracking with a mixture of fury and disbelief. He dropped the smoking book onto the coffee table, a cloud of ash rising between them.
"You don't know what's in there!" Elena shrieked, lunging forward to shove his chest with both palms. "You have no idea what that man did, and keeping it will destroy every single one of us!"
"That book is our history, Elena!" Michael roared back, his face flushing deep crimson as he gripped her wrists to stop her from diving back into the flames. "Lily's entire early childhood is inside those bindings. Why are you so terrified of the past?"
"Because the past isn't finished with us yet," Elena spat out, her eyes darting frantically toward the corner of the room.
Across the hearth, Eleanor remained entirely still. The sixty-five-year-old woman in the light grey sweater ignored the shouting match entirely. Her arthritic fingers carefully parted the stiff, fire-damaged leaves of a duplicate photo book she had kept hidden inside her knitting basket all evening.
As the paper parted, a crisp, heavy envelope slid onto her lap. It was addressed in bold, hurried strokes.
Elena froze mid-shriek. Her lungs emptied all at once.
Eleanor didn't look up from the page. With chilling composure, she adjusted her reading glasses and spoke just loud enough to cut through the domestic chaos.
“Your first mistake was burning the evidence,” Eleanor said quietly, her voice devoid of warmth. “Your second was forgetting I made two copies.”
Elena spun around, her eyes widening to impossible limits. She pressed her palm hard against her mouth, a stifled gasp escaping her throat as she stared at the envelope marked 'FOR MICHAEL ONLY'.

Michael turned slowly, his gaze shifting from his wife's horrified face to his mother's steady hands. He reached out to take the envelope, but Eleanor pulled it just out of reach, her eyes locking onto his with a warning he couldn't yet decipher.
