Chapter 7

The air in the subterranean archive room was thick with the scent of decaying paper, old leather, and damp earth. Julian stepped further into the room, his eyes scanning the scattered documents littering the floor around his mother. Ledger books from the nineteen-fifties, handwritten tax forms, and faded black-and-white photographs lay scattered like fallen leaves.

"Extortion?" Julian repeated, his voice echoing off the stone walls. He stopped a few feet from the mahogany table, keeping his gaze locked on Beatrice. The imposing matriarch looked smaller beneath the harsh glare of the work lamp, the silk dressing gown swallowing her usually rigid silhouette.

Beatrice placed the closed leather journal down on the table, her fingers resting lightly on its worn spine. "This family has never been as wealthy or as respectable as the townspeople believe," she said, her voice remarkably calm, devoid of the defensiveness she usually displayed. "Every generation has had to pay a toll to keep the estate afloat. When your father left, he didn't just walk away from a broken marriage; he walked away because he refused to sign the transfer documents that kept our debts hidden from the banks."

Julian shook his head, struggling to connect this sordid confession with the proud, unyielding woman who had ruled their household with an iron fist. "And Clara? What does Clara have to do with any of this?"

"Clara isn't just a restoration specialist," Beatrice sighed, finally looking away to stare at the flickering light of the lamp. "Her real name is Clara Vance. Her grandmother was the woman who vanished from this house thirty years ago—the woman your grandfather paid off to ensure she never laid claim to a single brick of this property."

Julian felt the room tilt slightly on its axis. The revelation hit him with physical force, stealing the breath from his lungs. "She came here on purpose," he realized, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together in his mind. "She infiltrated the estate. She got herself hired to uncover what happened."

"And she found it," Beatrice replied, gesturing toward an open metal drawer behind her. "She found the original settlement contract, signed under duress, along with the financial records proving that our current wealth is entirely built on stolen property and silenced witnesses."

Before Julian could respond, a soft sound at the entrance of the archive made them both freeze. Sarah stood in the doorway, her cream cardigan clutched tightly around her, her bruised face pale in the dim light. She had followed them down the back stairs.

"She didn't just find the documents, Beatrice," Sarah said, her voice trembling as she stepped into the room, her eyes fixed on the older woman. "She made copies. And before she left today, she uploaded them to the cloud."
