Chapter 15

The first pale streaks of winter dawn broke slowly over the sprawling estate, casting a cold, silver light across the snow-dusted lawns and the swollen, gray river below. The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a profound, crystalline silence that settled heavily over the grand house.

In the living room, the stone fireplace had long since gone cold, leaving only the faint scent of wood ash in the air. Sarah sat on the velvet armchair, holding the two-year-old toddler—now awake and playing quietly with a wooden block—wrapped securely in his light blue blanket. Her bruised cheek was still tender, but the anxiety in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, steady resolve.

Julian stood by the tall window, watching the flashing red and blue lights of the ambulance and police cruisers as they wound their way slowly down the gravel driveway toward the main gates. Clara was safely inside the ambulance, wrapped in warm blankets, conscious and stable, her digital records safely backed up and preserved for the authorities.

Arthur Vance had chosen to leave the estate before the emergency vehicles arrived, walking quietly back into the early morning mist toward the main road, having finally closed a chapter that had remained open for thirty agonizing years.
