Chapter 1

The weight of the heavy oak front door still lingered against Julian’s palm as he stepped fully into the grand, imposing living room. Outside, the relentless gale battered the tall glass windows, casting long, shivering shadows across the polished hardwood floor. Inside, the roaring stone fireplace threw erratic flickers of amber light over the high ceiling and the glittering crystal chandelier. Julian, thirty-five, with dark hair damp from the freezing rain and a short, neatly trimmed beard, pulled down the zipper of his dark blue jacket. Underneath, his heavy grey sweater felt suffocating against his chest, trapping a deep, suffocating tension that had built up during the frantic drive home.
Near the hearth, Sarah sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, her long red hair falling in damp strands across her shoulders. Her face bore undeniable purple and yellowish bruises along her left cheekbone, a stark map of sudden violence. She clutched a two-year-old blond toddler tightly against her chest, the child completely wrapped in a soft, light blue blanket, sleeping through the chaos with innocent detachment. Sarah wore a cream-colored cardigan over a simple light shirt, her fingers trembling slightly as she smoothed the blanket over the boy’s curls. Her anxious eyes met Julian’s across the room, carrying a silent plea for understanding that words could hardly capture.
Standing a few paces away near the mantelpiece, Beatrice, the sixty-year-old matriarch with short, immaculate grey hair, looked on with a stern, unyielding expression. She wore a tailored dark red velvet blazer that contrasted sharply with the pale terror in the room, her neck adorned with a classic pearl necklace that caught the firelight. Beatrice did not move, her posture rigid, embodying a lifetime of suppressed emotion and guarded family secrets.
Julian exhaled slowly, watching his breath mist slightly in the cool draft from the hallway. He wanted to rush to his wife and child, but his legs felt heavy, anchored by the dread of what had just transpired hours earlier.

"She lost control," Sarah said softly, her voice barely rising above the crackle of the burning oak logs. The confession hung in the tense air, heavy with accusation and sorrow.
Before Julian could process her words, Officer Miller, a thirty-five-year-old female police officer in a crisp uniform and sterile white forensic gloves, stepped out from the shadows near the staircase. In her gloved hands, she carefully held a small digital camera, its tiny liquid crystal display glowing with recorded footage. The screen flickered, revealing an argument between two women, followed abruptly by a desperate, lingering kiss. The room fell entirely silent, save for the wind outside.
